The Type 11 Shuttlecraft is a Starfleet auxiliary support craft attached normally to starships and stations to be used for long range missions, to help replace the old Type-5 and Type-6 shuttlecrafts. This type is designated as a class three shuttlecraft as it mainly built to be operated by more then two people for longer duration.

The type was designed to add an extra capability and flexibility to the larger Starfleet crafts, like Sovereign Class and Galaxy Class. It was designed to be a “big brother� of the Type-9 Shuttlecraft that were in service.

The shuttle is much more heavily armed than earlier models, with fore and aft torpedo launchers and phaser arrays. They can also fire tachyon bursts to disrupt shields. The shuttle is built to be able to dock with other vessels and has a docking hatch with magnetic clamps on the dorsal and ventral sides. The Type 11 has an aerodynamic design for atmospheric flight as well as medium-range interstellar travel.

It was designed a multi-purpose and functional support craft able to provide fire support to fighters, starships and ground troops. As well as having the ability to go on extensive long term away missions. Type 11s were introduced after they were designed by Geordi La Forge, in 2372 who at the time was serving on board the USS Enterprise-E. Captain Jean-Luc Picard wanted a new shuttle to compliment the Type 9s and make further larger improvements on that design.

In 2383 a major overhaul of all shuttlecraft systems were undertaken and many systems on the Type 11 were improved to further extended their usefulness to Starfleet.
