The Type 8 Shuttlecraft is a Starfleet auxiliary support craft attached normally to starships and stations to be used for short range missions. This type is designated as a class two shuttlecraft as it mainly built to be operated by two people for minimum duration. They were introduced in to fleet in 2371 on board the USS Intrepid and later on the USS Voyager where they were tested. By 2377 they replaced the Type 6 shuttlecraft due to their advance hybrid bio-neural and isolinear computer system components and improved defence and offence capabilities. In 2383 a major overhaul of all shuttlecraft systems were undertaken and many systems on the Type 8 were improved to further extended their usefulness to Starfleet.
