You know, I did consider that.  I also considered the fact that they've even given Neelix a holographic lung.  Holographic technology as made for certain episodes have a level of power that gets a bit ridiculous, but since the Doctor is seen using real tools, I decided that there is a technical limitation in using a non-real scanning device and things like that, so I'd say that holographic stuff doesn't work.  Also, when you come to hyposprays, and the fact that the *entire* ship isn't decked out with holo-emitters... you give someone a treatment, and as soon as they return to their quarters, it disappears, and they die or something.

Yeah, they're not going to be able to use anything that would be something like a drug or whatnot, but things like diagnostic tools like a medical tricorder, or even a dermal regenerater should be able to be holographed. Basically, anything that just uses energy or scans, but not something like drugs or whatever. I mean, it's pretty common practice that things made on a holodeck function just as their real life counterparts do, weapons, whatever Barclay made when he was super smart, etc. Holographic tools have also been used on several occasions, so the idea is workable as long as we remember the limitations. Really, the Doc probably wouldn't have run into the need on Voyager for holographic stuff, as the only place outside of sick bay where he could even appear would be the Holodeck, and I don't ever recall him responding to a medical emergency in the Holodeck without using the mobile emitter. With the shimmer thing and holo-emmiters in more locations then just sickbay and the holodecks, even having the ability to gleep between one place and another and at the least have a medical tricorder would be useful. At the least run a check and see what the injury is, if the guy can be moved, etc. You're not going to treat him with some wonky nano-probe ridden treatment method, but knowing that extent of his internal injuries and if even a closer examination or movement might be dangerous would be better then nothing. - [[User:Slagar|Slagar]] 07:41, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

As far as the medical tools thing and the shimmer function, would not an EHM simply be able to use holographic diagnostic tools so as to not have to worry about showing up elsewhere without it's medkit? If working from a proper model file, the ship should be able to recreate just about anything tool wise along with the EMH for it's use. Just thoughts. - Slagar 06:55, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

You know, I did consider that. I also considered the fact that they've even given Neelix a holographic lung.
