The USS da Gama is the newest starship to be commissioned by Starfleet. It is an Explorer-class starship, registry number NCC-99774, and was originally under the command of Commodore Zindar Rouavi. Following the vessel's commissioning it was sent on a shakedown cruise to Vulcan just hours before Federation President Edward Jellico declared war on the Vulcans.

As Commodore Rouavi was receiving a priority one message from FAdm Taylor, the da Gama was attacked by a trio of Vulcan Sector Defense Force vessels and moderately damaged. During the fighting, Commodore Rouavi was killed leaving Executive Officer Lieutenant Commander S'rravl T'ssarra in command. In a daring maneuver, T'ssarra and the crew of the da Gama were able to limp back to Sol for repairs at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards. It was at this time that FAdm Taylor promoted Lieutenant Commander T'ssarra to the rank of Captain and placed him in command of the da Gama to replace the deceased Commodore Rouavi.
