Solram was born on Trill, but was relocated to Armstrong City on Luna as a refugee very early in his childhood. As the Borg began to make more serious incursions into the quadrant many people began to flee from the outlaying Federation Systems towards the more inner core systems that would represent the last bastion of the Federation. Solram grew up being heavily influenced more by Human culture, traditions, and entertainment than he was by his own, despite his parents' best efforts to interest him in Trill culture and values. He also grew up watching the holos and hearing the news about the Borg War and quickly developed a very keen desire to join Starfleet. As a child he was more than a little distressed when the war ended before he had a chance to take part in it.

However, just because the war ended that was no reason for him to not still follow through on his ambition to join the Starfleet. During his Academy Entrance Exams he tested most highly in the fields of anatomy and biology and so he made the decision to pursue his Starfleet career through the field of medicine. Once he mind was made up in that regard he began to devour any information he could find on famous Starfleet doctors, taking a particularly keen interest in the careers of Leonard McCoy and Julian Bashir, having contacted the latter personally as a cadet on several occasions.

Solram cruised easily through his undergrad program at the Academy and was accepted without any hiccups by Starfleet Medical where he graduated tenth in his class. Due to his high class rank Solram was among those medical students offered the chance to select their assignment, a tradition at Starfleet Medical. While many of his classmates chose more glamorous assignments like the USS Ticonderoga, USS Enterprise, and USS da Gama, Solram made the decision to take an assignment that was viewed with disdain by many of his classmates due to their viewing it as an assignment too distant from Earth to be important without the benefit of being one of Starfleet's premier ships, space station Deep Space Five.
