Q is a member of the Q Continuum, a race of extremely powerful beings, who have evovled into omniscient, omnipotent beings, tasked with guarding the flow of spacetime.

Q has a tendency to harass members of "lower" species out of boredom, playing various malevolent games with them.

Q is capable of creating anything, teleporting anything, and pretty much doing anything with a mere thought.

During the Battle of Qo'noS, Q flung the USS Ark Royal across Klingon space, to the world Oraios, out of boredom, saving the lives of over eighty of it's crew, but stranding them on the planet. (see Q'd)
