Commander Rachel Shepherd is the captain of the USS Templar. She was elevated to commanding officer after the reassignment of her predecessor, Captain Peter Harrigan, whose first officer she had been for some three years. Her appointment, despite her experience as an officer and her familiarity with her ship and her crew, was considered somewhat controversial due to the timing - that being immediately after the sudden death of her husband, Captain Jason Shepherd, who was to be replaced by Harrigan as the captain of the USS Endeavour.
