The New Orleans Class was a frigate utilised by Starfleet in the late 24th and early 25th century.
The New Orleans class of Frigate was used primarily as a fleet escort in the mid 24th century. The vessel was considered to be outdated by 2380, as many newer classes with much better armaments and stronger structures were commissioned. During the Borg War, any active vessel was called upon to fight, so the class saw a resurgence in popularity. 22 vessels of the class fought in and were lost during the war's entirety.
Today, only the USS Phoenix remains active. All other ships of the class have been destroyed or decommissioned. Four ships of this class lay at the Jupiter storage facility. All are mothballed vessels that fought in the war with the exception of one. The USS Kyoto is a 3/4 completed hull with many installed components that is the primary spare part repository.
The New Orleans Class systems run on isoliniar chip sets that have been phased out of modern vessels. As a result, the examples of this class in storage rarely get visitors, but are maintained in case of another emergency situation and to keep the Phoenix in particular running.
