At the outbreak of the Borg war, K'ierran was a Commander and on leave from Starfleet attending to his family on Cait. His wife, M'esserri R'Pas who was a Marine Colonel at the time was also home on extended leave. They opted to stay out of the fight, concerned for their 12 and 5 year old groups of children. But later that year, the Borg were spotted massing for an advance on the Lyncais system, Cait's star.
K'ierran and M'esserri returned to Starfleet, taking command of their own ships. K'ierran was promoted to Captain and M'esserri was made a Brigadier General and placed in command of Task Group 48. Both officers wrangled up everybody they could find, mostly ships with Caitian commanders plus M'esserri's Task Group and engaged the Borg as they approached the system.
The battle was even and the Borg were taking significant losses, but so was the Federation fleet. A backup plan had been approved to prevent assimilation of Cait that involved orbital bombardment and destruction of natural resources. Without being ordered by General R'Pas, the 3rd Fleet, Task Group 32 ordered the evacuations of civilians and began bombarding the surface because the outcome of the battle looked certain.
In the end however, the fleet commanded by K'ierran T'arren and M'esserri R'Pas succeeded in stopping the Borg despite a 78% casualty rate. Returning to the system, they were outraged that Starfleet had proceeded with the bombardment. The action was rationalized by the Federation because the Borg seemed exceptionally interested in the system and would no doubt be back to take it later. Now that it was stripped of resources, they may not come back to the area and battles could be avoided.
K'ierran was awarded for his service in the battle and promoted to Rear Admiral in order to take command of his ow Task Group. Despite the anger for the bombardment of Cait, he knew he needed to do his part to ensure the Borg were defeated, and took the command. For the rest of the war, he fought and even tried to make it to the final Battle of Sol. However, his Task Group was too late and by the time they arrived, the system was secure.
