Parents

Born aboard the USS Inspiration outside of wedlock, Zoe has only ever known life aboard a Starfleet vessel. Her mother, Ewa, was a communications officer, her father Erik a security officer, her mother’s insistence to keep Zoe when she found she was pregnant regardless of the uneasy truce between her and her father was something that haunted her upbringing and ultimately impeded on her will to achieve during her education.

When she was fourteen, the borg infiltrated the Inspiration’s quadrant with a distress call emanating from a husk of a ship they had left drifting through space, a proximity relay heralding their shielded vessels when another ship came in range. As they were boarded her step-father, who was by a cruel twist of fate the chief of security and her father’s superior, found her and saw them both aboard a shuttle amongst other escaping civilians. The shuttle, and a few others, found sanctuary aboard Spacedock I, Alpha Centuri. Her birth parents were not amongst the survivors.

Step-Father

Chief Security Officer aboard the USS Inspiration around the time of Zoe's conception, it's not known to what degree he and Ewa were associated prior to the birth, only that the two were involved in a romantic relationship come her formative years and were married by the time she was seven. Former Commander Nelson Petters did as much as he could have done to be a second father to Zoe, though tension between he and Erik was unavoidable. It was Nelson that saved Zoe from the Inspiration when it was boarded by the Borg, the circumstances of which saw an investigation into the matter and saw Nelson stripped of his rank for misconduct, there not being sufficient evidence for desertion. He is currently held in the brig of Spacedock 1 for unrelated charges.

Physical Appearance

In stature, it is easy to mistake Zoe for being shorter than she actually is. Standing at 5' 10", proportions seem to lend themselves to a woman much shorter in height. She has a fairly sharp facial structure, a narrow jawline with sheer cheekbones. Her eyes are large, brown and emotive, skin faintly creased at the corners. Her brow is marred with lines of worry, her dark hair wiry, curly and difficult to keep control over. She keeps enough care of her appearance to maintain a level of professionalism, but seldom much more than that. She is healthy and athletic in build through a rigorous regime of morning runs and evening work-outs.

History

The shuttle, and a few others, found sanctuary aboard Spacedock I. Her birth parents were not amongst the survivors.

Her step-father was involved in a lot of meetings that she later understood to be a tribunal for abandoning his post, which ultimately saw him stripped of his rank and find comfort in the bottle. In the years that followed, through the grief of her lost parents and witnessing her step-father, a once proud and noble man, descend into alcoholism, Zoe applied herself to Starfleet teachings more fervently. When the relationship with her step-father became abusive she did not suffer it long. She soon reported his behaviour and him incarcerated in the brig.

Not long after, at the age of seventeen, she enrolled in the Starfleet Academy. The experience of planetside life saw a notable change for the better in Zoe’s behaviour and mentality. As well as her academic performance improving to the point of distinction, in her third year she saw a councillor for the first time, a habit she kept up long after she graduated with honours from the Academy.

Her service record from that point showed a woman that strove for the best results in terms of acting security around the ship and through a combination of aptitude for the job, opportunities presenting themselves to her in good time, and being fairly ruthless in snatching up said opportunities. Her reputation was muddied aboard the Newcastle when she was a suspect for the death of an Ensign by use of a sabotaged phaser in training exercises. She was held suspect because it was believed she might have intended the phaser to be used against a rival for promotion, but ultimately was found innocent.

The incident brought to light just how alienating she had been of her peers. Though the motive was weak and her detainment for questioning was to rule her out, several of her peers became convinced that she was capable of the act and guilty of the murder. The reputation it garnered was never quite lived down, her career aboard the Newcastle effectively stunted if not compromised. The then Chief of Security offered Zoe a clean slate aboard the Endevour as the ship’s Chief Security Officer.
