Deep Space Five is a Phase II Spacedock-class starbase situated in the Algedi System, specifically orbiting Algedi IV. It is the main centre of operations for the Second Fleet, and the first space station to be built from the ground up outside of the Core Worlds since the War.
History
In late 2404, the order came from Starfleet Command for the reforming of the Second Fleet, an expansion force with the mandate to stake a claim to territories old and new. The Federation was no longer to limit its borders to Sol and the Core Worlds, but was to make efforts to become once again the great dominant galactic power they had once been.
Construction began in the Algedi System of a new starbase, Spacedock-class and built in the same manner as a station would be in the 24th Century. This was not a creation cobbled together from the remains of other vessels, such as the 'Frankenstein' nature of Deep Space One, the core of which was the saucer-section of the USS Cario, but rather a classic space station of a recognisable and tried and true design. Designated Deep Space Five, it would be a first foothold for the Second Fleet’s efforts, a hub of local exploration and trade, and a centre from which various expansionist task forces could launch their campaign.
The Algedi system was chosen primarily because it lies relatively close to many potentially verdant territories, such as Bolarus, and none of the many physical obstacles that have come from debris and gravitic anomalies in the war block the route back to the Core Worlds.
In early 2406, enough of the main body of Deep Space Five was finished for the base to be crewed and declared operational, but it will still be several months before the starbase will be fully constructed. Regardless, the Second Fleet have begun to use it and the Algedi System as a launch point for several of their campaigns, and merchants and explorers are beginning to flock there, seeing DS5 as an outpost on the threshold of the new frontier.
Current Status
Deep Space Five is currently being crewed. Command was first given to Captain John Avery, who passed away suddenly before he even reached the Algredi System. The second choice was subsequently assigned - war veteran and political military advisor Captain Edward Beckett.
The Defiant Class USS Valiant has been assigned as an attached vessel to DS5 and, in a surprise move, the newly-completed Century class USS Columbia has been posted as well. It is intended that the Columbia be able to represent Starfleet's strength in the Algedi System, and be available to be deployed as a rapid response for any localised Second Fleet difficulties.
