An uprated Excelsior Class vessel originally used to attempt to stop USS Defiant reaching Earth as part of Admiral Leyton's attempted coup d'état, Lakota served to coordinate and deploy Starfleet Security forces on Earth during the period of martial law and received a refit that included upgraded phasers and a supply of quantum torpedoes. (DS9: "Homefront")
The ship was declared missing in action on December 10th 2390 after being sent to investigate an area of severe subspace disturbance several hundred lights from the Sol system. However, the ship was never actually lost - the listing was an error, and remained on the books unnoticed for much of the Borg War. Following the war, the ship was brought in for extensive refits, including a test model of the quantum slipstream drive designed for smaller vessels with lower energy production capability than the Excalibur.
