Personal Description

Physical

Alana has a slim to average build, with a toned body due to regular workouts. Full lips, shoulder length light blonde hair and olive green eyes. She has Trill spots, which run the length of her body, from the top of her forehead to her feet, as is typical of her species.

Psychological

Something of a rebel and outsider throughout most of her life, which only mellowed slightly after becoming joined, Alana has never been the most sociable of people, often preferring to be alone. Nevertheless, she is a skilled officer with a natural flair for a multitude of tacical and combat skills. Since becoming joined with the Aubrey symbiont, she also has the combined life experiences of the five hosts before her, including two previous careers in Starfleet.

History

Symbiont

The Aubrey symbiont was born in 2134 and was joined with its first host, Allana, in 2165. Allana was a biologist who gained prominence in her field, dedicating herself almost entirely to her studies and work. She never married, although she was not upset at this, and eventually passed the symbiont on in 2239 after completing her last major project and a period of retirement.

The second host, Lela, was a business woman who ran a large mining conglomerate during the latter half of the 23rd century. Unlike Allana, she married and had two children, but was critically wounded in a shuttle accident in 2290. The symbiont was saved and was passed on to the next host.

The third host to Aubrey was Jalen, the first male host. After becoming joined, Jalen married and fathered a child, settling down to become a member of the Symbiosis Commission. He served for many years, looking after symbionts as well as approving or rejecting prospective hosts. He had just been appointed Head of the Commission when he, too, was seriously wounded in a shuttle crash in 2315, dying on route to the hospital. Again, the symbiont was saved and was passed on to another. From then on, all hosts of Aubrey have had something of an aversion to shuttlecraft.

Barak Aubrey, 2384

The forth host was a man named Tobin, a Starfleet Engineer. He entered the program a good few years later than most, since he wanted to achieve a certain rank in Starfleet first, but nonetheless was successful, receiving the Aubrey symbiont. Returning to Starfleet after Joining, he served with distinction and had a long and colourful career. He kept his nature as a joined Trill largely secret from Starfleet, with only the Chief Medical Officers of the vessels he served aboard ever knowing. Retiring in 2346, he returned to Trill to live with his family. Stricken with an illness in 2362 that began to affect his body’s ability to remain a host, he held on for as long as was reasonably possible before allowing the symbiont to be passed on to the next host – Barak – in 2363.

Born on Trill in 2338, from a young age he always wanted to enter the symbiont program to become joined, like many on his world. Fortunately, for him, Barak was bright enough and dedicated enough to gain entry and eventually became a viable candidate for joining, entering the program about two years after he graduated Starfleet Academy. He pursued his goals largely to the exclusion of everything else and so had only a few friends. In fact, this almost derailed the entire process as his Field Docent noted that he was in danger of not being developed enough socially, with his tendency towards sarcasm not helping either. As a result, Barak promised and then quickly made attempts to rectify this and paid more attention to his friends and family. He subsequently received a positive recommendation and went on to become joined.

Barak had a highly successful and distinguished career in Starfleet, spanning a period of 45 years, reaching flag rank and surviving the entirety of the Borg Conflict. The political turmoil in the aftermath of the war, however, caused him to loose his drive to serve and he retired from Starfleet in 2405 to carve out a quieter life with his wife, Jade Lian, with whom he had had a daughter in early 2386. Unfortunately, his retirement and life were cut short as he was fatally wounded in a fight with a gang of locals while taking a brief holiday in Rome. No one knows why the attack took place and the culprits were never caught, leaving his family devastated.

Taken to a local hospital, the symbiont was transferred in an emergency procedure to Alana (one 'l') on November 7th 2406.

Current Host

Alana as a child.
Alana was Born as Alana Elore in a Southern province on Trill in late 2378. Her parents, Curzon and Xanthe were operators of a small cargo fleet and were often busy but they soon noticed that Alana was an extremely intelligent but troubled child. She would frequently have nightmares and spend long periods of time alone, refusing to speak with anyone. She paid only passing attention to her appearance and was something of a social outcast, sometimes getting involved in fights with the other children at school. Those she did speak to, however, quickly realized that she remembered everything she heard and saw and possessed a keen mind. Just before the the Borg Conflict became a galaxy wide problem - and likely not long before Trill was assimilated, although its fate remains unknown - the family business moved to Earth to set up a new headquarters there. Alana did not settle in to her new surroundings particularly well and again was an outsider.

Upon learning the true extent of the Borg Invasion and the loss of contact with Trill in 2390, however, Alana appeared to transform into a different person almost overnight, morphing from a troubled child to a driven young woman. She insisted that she do everything she could to help stop the Borg and set herself to joining Starfleet as soon as she could possibly achieve. It became her sole focus and she dived into nearly every known text and knowledge base she could find about the Borg and Starfleet and absorbed it all very quickly, leading some to carefully joke that she was in fact a Borg in disguise and was 'assimilating' everything she came across.

Realizing that they would not be able to stop her, her parents gave permission and she was accepted into Starfleet Academy at the age of 16 in 2394. She achieved high grades in all her classes but was reprimanded quite a number of times over the next three years for being too argumentative and taking too many risks. Alana was not precisely an outcast at the academy but had only a few close friends. Nevertheless, in her second year she entered into what was essentially her first real relationship with a male cadet a year ahead of her. The relationship lasted only a few months but she began to open up more, integrating herself more with her peers. She remains, overall, though, generally a private person.

Alana at the Academy, 2398.
At the climax of the Borg War, Alana graduated in 2398 as a Security/Tactical officer, aged 20, only months before the Battle of Sol. She soon saw combat as the Borg made their last ditch onslaught and participated in the Battle of Sol. She was injured three times during the Five Days but each time was patched up and sent back to fight. Unlike so many during that final battle, and even though her ship was destroyed on the final day, Alana survived aboard an escape pod and was recovered three days later.
Alana on Earth, 2406.
After recovering, Alana was posted to a couple different vessels over the next six years and only left the Sol system rarely, as Starfleet kept most of its forces focused on defense. She gained promotion to Lieutenant but began to grow restless and could be heard frequently advocating that Starfleet leave the Sol system to see what had become of the galaxy. Frustrated, she eventually took a leave of absence in 2406 to explore something herself; Earth. In November, she was in Rome when late at night she came across a man wounded in a side-alley. She discovered that this man was Barak Aubrey, retired Admiral and joined Trill, and that he was going to die.
Alana aboard the USS Excalibur, 2407.

Alana took him to a medical centre, but it was too late and she soon realized that the Doctors intended to transfer the symbiont to a new host; her. Alana strongly objected at first; she had never wanted to become joined. Unlike most Trill, always had she been against the idea of having a "worm" inside her, which would cram her head full of other peoples memories and personalities. However, when faced with the fact that she would either have to take the Symbiont or allow it to die as Barak slipped away, she reluctantly agreed. The transfer was carried out and Alana became the sixth host of Aubrey.

Totally unprepared, after the operation Alana struggled with being joined and there were precious few Trill to guide her. Her LOA reached an end, however, and Starfleet ordered Alana to return to duty aboard the USS Excalibur. She developed suddenly a keen interest in piloting and found herself driven to switch specialties, enrolling in shortnened courses and using Barak's memories as a pilot (no doubt the source of Alana's newfound interest) was quickly able to gain requalification. If anything, her desire to "get out there" grew after becoming joined and she sought any opportunity she could. Fortune struck in 2408 when it transpired that the Excalibur was to ferry a new command staff and supplies to the disabled USS Enterprise, a vessel she knew was on the forefront of the Re-exploration Initiative. She sought out Captain Jerok, the newly appointed commander of the Enterprise, and successfully petitioned him for a transfer.

After serving as Second Officer and Chief Helm Officer of the Enterprise for only a few months, Alana was unexpectedly promoted to Executive Officer following the permanent incapacitation of Lt. Commander Slade Matthews, the previous XO.
