Darek III
From FEInfobase
Darek III is the third planet of the Darek system, and one of the most significant colonies established in the early days of the Federation. A prime trade stop-off on the routes out of Earth and other Human colonies, into the rest of the Federation and other powers, what was initially meant to simply be a fuelling spot for freighters eventually turned into a massive urban colonial power. Rich from merchant travel, though primarily reliant upon interstellar communication for resources, Darek III rose to become one of the most significant and independent Human colonies, through the commerce and wealth establishing its own particular culture.
The Borg War itself initially saw Darek III flourishing even more as a significant zone through which Starfleet could funnel ships out of Earth. But with the conclusion of hostilities, a colony which relied on primarily being a hub so as to gain wealth found itself as a frontier colony instead. With less of an ability to draw on other planets for resources, much of the infrastructure collapsed, the Governor having to initialise martial law from 2401 to 2403 to maintain peace and order.
Presently, Darek III is something of an urban wasteland, scrounging for resources, and trading past cultural riches for more modern practical ones. It is often suggested that this diminishment as a frontier colony is a reason for the hawkish expansionism of the policies Darek III native, former Council Representative, and current Presidential Candidate Alexander Stark - for Darek III would surely rapidly develop and thrive were it once again a hub, rather than a frontier.
