Brief History

During the escalating borg conflict and the fears of a sol system invasion a number of unorthodox ship builds happened at utopia planetia. Two galaxy class ships were the test bed's for one such experiment.The sulu and it's sister ship the Chekov were rapidly refit with a multitude of new weaponry and new systems.Older non combat systems were hastily removed and in some cases just simply cut out of the ships superstructure.

Gone were most of the crew quarters and luxuries that had come to define the galaxy class since its first launch.In a moment of what could only be described as pure lunacy both ships were fitted with another third warp nacel as a redundant drive system measure.At first glance both ships seemed an impressive collection of technology and design.Simple computer testing of flight systems and warp field tests seemed to prove the ships were in fine shape and battle capable.

That changed when they entered combat for the first time. During one of the first real engagements with the borg testing the defences of the sol system. USS Chekov suffered a structural integrity field failure.Most of the crew aboard were killed, liquefied under the extreme stress and pressures of the ship traveling at warp and impulse. USS Sulu fared slightly better her upper saucer phaser array overloaded destroying much of deck four and destroyed the optical data network enough that a small temporary core had to be brought to the Sulu to get it to limp back to Utopia for repairs after the battle. Both ships went on to serve in secondary last chance roles up until the end of the war.The Chekov suffered a catastrophic systems failure and was destroyed shortly before the end of the war.

Only two ships were ever refit the Sulu and the Chekov. Today only the starship Sulu survives, Chekov was a victim of her own design.
