Physical Description

O'Malley is tall, stout and heavy built. He usually has a 5 o'clock shadow within a few hours of shaving, and so his facial hair is often breaking regulations.

He speaks with an accent that has a slight Russian tint to it.

Personality & Traits

Nikolai, or Nick, is entirely too much like the two people he hates the most, his father and his Uncle Yuri. He's a disturbed, volatile tempered protector. He doesn't understand feelings very well, and is often troubled and conflicted. He doesn't talk about himself, although he'll talk incessantly about his family. He's an insomniac, often wandering the corridors, or going to the gym, at night rather than stare at the ceiling in the dark.

While he has a rough exterior, there's still a little kid inside of him that's just wanting love. Having grown up in the most dysfunctional family of which he'd ever heard(in fact, having people comment that his was the most dysfunctional family in the Federation), he has troubles with his feelings, and so he often resorts to just showing no feelings at all. He has loosened up on his feelings over the years, with the Borg War over, however, he feels that the only thing that roots him in his sanity is his dedication to the Federation.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths:

  • He is a protector, he'd rather die for his men than see anyone hurt.
  • He is a little reckless, which can work in his favor.
  • He has a quick calculating mind.
  • He is a quick study with a great memory for details.

Weaknesses:

  • He is a protector, he cares more for his own people than himself.
  • He reckless, which doesn't always work in his favor.
  • He is still haunted by his past, which has many variables and weaknesses associated with them.
  • He is a recovering alcoholic, two years sober, but still tempted.

Ambitions

Nikolai O'Malley failed in his main ambition in life with the presumed death of his baby brother Sergei, because he had failed to protect his family. After that point, his goal in life was to protect the rest of his family, as well as to protect the Federation, at whatever cost. He has little hope for promotion past Major, however, he does hold out some hope for Colonel, or maybe General.

Hobbies & Interests Exercise, poetry(He won't tell you that, unless it's something dark), history, holo-mysteries, target practice and cooking(He won't tell you that if his life depended on it). He also has a fairly eclectic taste in music and an all too keen knowledge of mafia workings, including the bookie side.

History

Nikolai and his twin Kendall were born to Sergeant Rupert O'Malley and Ensign Sezja O'Malley, both stationed near the Orion boarder. They grew up among the Marines, but were mostly taken care of by their mother. When Nikolai was two, he got a baby brother, Sergei, and when he was five, a baby sister, Brites.

Then, everything changed. The Dominion War started, and from his room in the small family quarters, he could hear her parents arguing, almost every night. Finally, the arguing stopped, and the next morning they were told they were going to go live with their Uncle Yuri on Earth.

A month later, they were on Earth, where they met Uncle Yuri, a tall, dark-haired man who spoke four words in English and smelled of whiskey and cigars. Yuri behaved himself for the first couple of months, spending time with them, making sure everything was good. Then came the fateful news that the USS Nightcrawler, the O'Malleys' ship, had been destroyed.

Nikolai and Kendall had to mature, as Yuri, no longer hampered by the threat of his brother-in-law or his sister killing him, became a lousy guardian. There was drinking, strange people, and whores in Uncle Yuri's house, mainly because Yuri ran a brothel. Yuri himself was seldom around, and busy when he was. The eldest O'Malley boy has been permanently psychologically scarred by going in to ask his uncle where the tea was, and finding him doing, in his mind, nasty things, with a girl who's name he never learned.

The O'Malleys were babysat by an older girl named Toma, everyone in the family loved her. Everyone except Nikolai. He never got along with the teen, arguing with her over everything. He couldn't explain why he didn't like her, he just got a bad feeling about her, like she was somehow in league with Yuri, which would make sense given as his uncle paid her.

In school, Nikolai was constantly picked on, for the first few days. The young man fixed that fairly quickly by breaking a fellow student's nose, in front of the teacher, for saying he talked funny. After he got off of suspension, no one ever approached within a five foot radius of the boy. This only encouraged his actions.

At both school and home, Nikolai was the protector. He hated bullies with a passion, and often would go out of his way to keep someone from being picked on. At home, he was stubborn and willing enough to take his Uncle's aggression, shielding the others. He learned how to use a basic dermal-regenerator to fix his wounds so that no one would have to know.

At eight years old, Nikolai got the best news he could ever have thought of. His father was still alive, and would be taking custody of the children as soon as he was cleared by medical. For the next two years, knowing that Sergeant O'Malley was in the mental hospital, Nikola got bolder and bolder with his uncle, knowing that Yuri couldn't do anything with his father coming back.

When Rupert O'Malley finally got custody of the kids, Nikola almost immediately decided he didn't like his father either. The young boy was convinced that his father was insane, having heard his screams from the nightmares, and his conversations with people who weren't there. It was during one of these conversations that Nick became convinced that it was all his father's fault that his life had gone wrong. When Nick was thirteen, he watched the televised trial of Tadem Necret, and learned that one of his father's escape attempts may have caused his mother's execution, the young boy also learned the details of his mother's death, which still haunts him today.

The growing boy resented his father, but had a great desire to get the man's attention. He would often act out, as would his siblings, in an effort to get some attention from their workaholic father. Nick, however, was the one that really took that and his protection of his family to an extreme. After his brother nearly burned down the base, on accident of course, he took the blame and spent a month in a juvenile correctional facility. After that Nikolai started hanging out with the wrong crowd, listening to music loud enough to disturb the neighbors, and getting into fights. Unfortunately, nothing he did ever got his father's attention.

When the Borg War started, it all seemed like a surreal nightmare to Nikolai. He had already started Marine Corps Basic Training, and Kendall had been accepted into Starfleet Academy. The guilt lead him into a deep depression when his father sent Sergei and Brites to live with Uncle Yuri again. If he had only known what would happen, he would have DOR and saved his family.

The following year, Nick sank back into depression during the war on the news that Sergei had been arrested for the murder of Yuri Pablovinski. While Nick believed that Yuri deserved it, and there were probably extenuating circumstances, Sergei was still sentenced to 20 years in a Federation Penal Facility, and Brites was sent to foster care.

Depressed over his family situation, Nikolai pushed himself in his career to get away from the bitter truth. He spent 16 to 20 hours a day working or training, hiding from the guilt and the pain. This effort got him noticed by his superiors, and he was quickly promoted up through the ranks. However, it had an adverse affect on him as well, he started lashing out at people again, turning even more into his father than he ever imagined.

Unable to quench his frustration, O'Malley added schooling to his agenda, working for a major in History. He took long-distance courses for six years before he graduated. Shortly afterwards, he was offered a commission, since many officers had been lost in the war already. For five years, O'Malley lead troops during the war. Then just as quickly as it had started, the war was over.

Captain O'Malley managed to procure leave time to find those in his family. His father had retired to a nice mental facility on Earth, having gotten a discharge in the middle of the war. Kendall was a Commander working on the mental rehabilitation of Starfleet and Marine personnel. Brites had gotten married and widowed, twice, as well as losing an arm during one of the attacks on Earth. Sergei, however, having been paroled some time earlier, was missing and presumed dead.

The Marine Corps then transformed into the Federation Mobile Infantry, and Nick went with it. While his father would have said it was a shame to abandon the traditions of the Corps, Nikolai thought it was a good move to forget about what happened during the war. O'Malley's reaction to the end of the war wasn't the best. He now understood why his father would scream at night, since he often woke from troubled dreams, seeing lost friends turned Borg. He also started drinking, which lead to several disciplinary problems.

Major O'Malley was demoted in 2403 for assault of a fellow officer during a barroom brawl. After that, Lt.Major O'Malley was given counseling, as well as going through rehab for his drinking problem. After two years of keeping his nose clean, he was promoted back to the rank of Major and given command of the SABRE squad Hell-Hounds.
