Questions

If anyone wants to comment or ask questions feel free.

I like the idea of the force being downsized and confirming them as spec ops is good, but they still seem pretty numerous to be compared to the SAS. I think the US Green Berets (Army Rangers, Delta Force etc.) are quite numerous themselves, but... Now that I think about it, the idea of having a large 'spec ops' group could work a la the US Green Berets, but you could have a much smaller sub-organisation, similar to Delta Force and the SAS, which isn't posted on every starship and colony etc. The reason I mention Delta Force alongside the SAS is because I believe the unit has a Presidential order of some sort, allowing them to break international laws, as long as in doing so they serve the interests of the United States. Such an order would seem to fit in well with the new starfleet ethic.

I know you're pushing for a MACO-esque feel with the Sabres, so my primary concern with the group is the size. I don't see a believable special forces organisation having more than a few thousand soldiers, and that's pushing it. This might be more than enough on Earth, but there are the stations and terraformed bodies in Sol, not to mention places like Alpha Centauri. Beyond this though, I don't see the 'core' of this group - the really special spec ops guys, being more than a couple of hundred in number, and again, that seems to push it. Nor can I really envisage all the Federation's ground forces being classed as spec-ops. Their training might be tough, but if they all get it, they can't all be special. I think you can either go with the green beret idea, or simply have a small and undermanned Federation Army, with the Sabres as Spec Ops.

As well as that, I'm not overly keen on the use of sqaudron. It puts me in mind of fighters, or perhaps a TF of Starships but not a group of soldiers. Sabre unit, or division (but division of what?) sound better in my mind.

Finally, does it stand for something? As I was writing all that 'not starfleet' stuff on the forums, I wondered if perhaps the S stood for Starfleet... Specially ABle REconnaisance Squads? Spatial Assault... Stupid Armed Bully REserve... bleh? - Chris 07:51, 21 November 2005 (EST)

I changed a few lil things around and added a few small details. The whole S.A.B.R.E thing is pure bullshit we never really intended it to stand for anything.  :) -Cash

I have to say (and I'm not trying to be negative, honest) that I prefer the idea of a group simply called the Sabre Corps as opposed to Special Assault Boarding Recon Evasion Operations - that smacks of something that's been squeezed to fit the phrase. Sabre is fine just as a name - I don't think we should try and fit something around it that doesn't fit. -Chris 14:01, 15 December 2005 (EST)

Corpses

Just fyi, I believe it should be "Corps" rather than "Corp." - Chris 04:11, 12 December 2005 (EST)

Update

I've re-wrote the layout and chain of command for the SABRE Corps after doing a bit of a research on the British Army / SAS as well as after trying to explain clearly to my SDCO as well as two other COs in FE the whole idea about the Sabres.

Numbers

So I'm sitting here thinking, what are the total numbers of Sabre's around FE land?

I'm thinking 8 to 12 people per SABRE team, 10 teams total across FE? More less? Obviously of those 10 teams, that doesn't include trainee's who would be coming up through the ranks.

So ideas? Numbers?

I like the idea of the Sabres being uber elite. We have them listed in the ship specs pages as being possibly assigned to all ship classes i was going to propose a while back of that being changed to FMI platoons being assigned to starships. That could work for being a good IC explanation ground pounder "soldier" presence on ships. And keeping Sabre teams on the ships that have or want them special and unique.Like Enterprise's sabres would be special and so would pheonix if they choose to have them.We wouldn't restrict anyone from having them just keep them "special" IC.Captain Davies 05:51, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

Well, 120 or so SABRE's total would certainly make them special, not every ship has them - even T's flag doesn't have any assigned, so far the only ship that does is Enterprise to my knowledge.

And then the Hell Hounds are detatched.
