The Ticonderoga was commissioned in 2410 and assigned to the Starfleet Re-Exploration Initiative. Captain J'al Grenn was given command and the ship was charged with the Initiative's mission. To re-explore the galaxy and become ambassadors to new and former Federation member worlds to re-establish the United Federation of Planets.

The vessel's primary mission is to explore formerly known space and determine the status of entities in the wake of the Borg War. The Ticonderoga is fitted to operate for extended periods in deep space, away from the core of the current Federation. The class was designed to be a deep space explorer from the start, projecting the Federation far beyond its borders. The basic concept for the class was "a new Constitution Class explorer for the 25th Century" when it was developed in the post-Dominion War era.

Ticonderoga was laid down in 2407, one of only a small handful of ships to be constructed due to material shortages. It was immediately fit for long range missions and put under Captain Grenn's command to undergo shakedown. The Ticonderoga is expected to boost the capabilities of the Re-Exploration Initative whose ships have been geared for heavy combat operations since its inception. The more exploration capable Luna Class is a welcome addition to expanding the range of operations.
