In late 2399 it was decided to finally update the standard Starfleet uniform from the more military black and grey uniforms to a more retro-throwback towards the uniform schemes of the mid 24th century. While the resources needed for this are not as abundant as they once were. A majority of replication services across the Federation were being devoted towards food and the industrial sector. The initial delivery of uniforms was being staggered and placed in places of high visibility for Starfleet as recommended by the public relations department.

Eventually in 2406 Starfleet Command decreed that they would implement a new policy where as, similar to as they had done in the 2370s, Starfleet captains would be able to choose which variant of the Starfleet uniform they could use. Starfleet believed that this ability to choose and diversify starships would allow for better morale.

Most people and starships decided to stick with the standard militarized uniforms, while a few starships did fully convert to the variant-B uniforms. The variant-B uniforms can be more often seen on the few deep exploration vessels that Starfleet has, like the Federation flagship Enterprise, and some of the younger members of the Starfleet admiralty.
