The Cybernetically Enhanced Replacement Eye System was developed by Captain Geordi LaForge, based on his own cybernetic eyes. CERES has a more advanced censor system and also utilizes micro-holotechnology to allow the user to see things normally, making it perfect for those who have only lost use of one eye.

It is installed, similar to a Borg Personal Sensor node. The Eye socket is partially removed and replaced with a mechanical socket that the eye pops into. Designed to be easy to remove in case of fualt (Geordi wanted it to be as easy as removing his old visor), a realease switch can be activated by pressing the temple in a certain way which causes the main unit to seperate from the socket base. The fualt in the unit can then be fixed and is easily popped back in.

Originally the release switch was just behind the on the side of the head, but it was found that if the wearer wanted to lean their head on their left hand, the eye accidentally ejected a large percent of the time.

CERES uses the DCI (Depth Perception Inducer) system, which reads the singles coming from the good eye, and aligns itself to balance, giving perfect depth perception. The issue is that the DCI is the most fualty part of the unit and considering the amount of data it brings in from the right eye, it is not uncommon for them to become misaligned.

CERESes are registered with SFEC prefix, which means STARFLEET ENGINEERING CORP. Left eyes have an "A" for a suffix, while Right eyes have a "B".

There are only about 4 CERESes used in the Federation at this time. One such user is Dame Danielle Ferris, a Fighterpilot in Starfleet and a Knight of the Selurian crown who lost her eye in a fight with a tactical cube. The CERES she uses is often overworked (she often uses it in the place of her ship's sensors, and the DCI is known to misalign every now and then. So much so that her Flight Technician reschooled as Cybernetiscist just to keep the thing the in top shape. Emel Kalain also relies upon a CERES implant, and has noted the implant's inability to function when in an environment influences by certain temporal phenomena.
