Jo Harper is a survivor of a Federation colony that was destroyed by the Borg in 2393; her parents were listed among the deceased. She does not speak of anything that happened to her before she joined Starfleet Academy in 2396. And to this day, the events in her life between 2393 and 2396 remain a mystery.

Record Notes
All of her former COs have noted that she does not smile. Ever. One of her COs likened her to a Vulcan.
Her record is nearly spotless, except for one incident in Starfleet Academy, in 2398. A student witnessed her knock a male cadet unconscious for calling her "Joanna".
