The Algedi System is approximately 30 Light-Years from Sol of eight planets. First explored in 2159, it was originally deemed too remote and too limited in resources to be of much importance amongst inhabitable systems of more abundant riches, and was left as something of a backwater for 250 years. In the aftermath of the Borg War, however, the resources once overlooked are now considered far more tantalising. It also suffered little by way of physical damage during the conflict; nor did the travel route between the system and Sol, factors which contributed for its selection as the home of Deep Space Five, the centre for the Second Fleet's expansionist operations.

Planets of Algedi
Algedi III
Algedi III itself is C-class planet, and entirely uninhabitable. It is mostly as unremarkable as much of the rest of the system save one of its moons, Algedi IIIa, which by good chance holds a breathable atmosphere. There are some small oceans, but almost all of the land mass which covers most of the planet boasts a terrain of thick, inhospitable jungle which it takes time and distinctive effort to overcome - for its rather fierce wildlife as much as its dense forestry. As such, there are only three hints of civilisation on Algedi IIIa.
The first are the fishing businesses which attempt to harvest the riches of IIIa's oceans for the benefit of the colony on Algedi IV. It is probably the colony's most consistent source of food. There are also some limited science expeditions exploring the oceans for any further riches, though all have come up empty-handed.
The second, and most successful, is Fort Tribute, a Federation Mobile Infantry base established at the same time as construction began of DS5. The Algedi Division stand ready for aiding in the defence of the system, but primarily so they are easily accessible should the Second Fleet need their manpower for the claiming of a planet.
The third, most esoteric, is the recent arrival of a tourist company on a small chain of islands on the hottest part of the moon. They are attempting to build a pleasure resort, though are meeting opposition from the planet's difficult terrain.
Algedi IV
Algedi IV is technically an M-class planet, but one of the more miserable ever discovered. It is mostly covered in barely-hospitable tundra, the exception being the long strip along the comparatively warm equator. Here the terrain is merely cold, and it is on this longitude that an array of colonies have been built, mostly small villages save the largest, New Kashmir. It was the first brand new colony established after the war, being neither a settlement to have survived the conflict nor a settlement returned to after abandonment. As such, it has received a lot of support from the factions within the Federation who wish to encourage continued colonisation, being painted on Sol as a pleasant land of opportunity.
In reality, the climate is uncomfortably cool, though not lethally, the land is poor and almost useless in agriculture, and the wildlife small and difficult to hunt or breed. There are also very few useful natural resources, most of the terrain consisting of rocky turf. As such, New Kashmir has been built almost exclusively out of pre-fabricated buildings, and relies mostly on supplies from other colonies or from the Core Worlds. The sole exception to this is its harvesting of the fish on Algedi IIIa.
Most of its inhabitants are workers in the mining facility on Algedi V and their families, but since the system has received attention from Starfleet, it has seen something of a population boom. Scientists and explorers have come to Algedi IV on their way to the new open border, but more importantly, traders and their corporations have arrived at New Kashmir to establish footholds as they attempt to plunder the markets of the rediscovered planets beyond the Algedi System. This has given New Kashmir something of a worth beyond its potential, but at the end of the day Algedi IV is still a cold, rather dark, miserable place.
Algedi V
Faint residues of dilithium were found in the atmosphere of Algedi V, a B-class planet, when the system was discovered in 2159. However, these were overlooked as richer deposits were found in nearby systems, and even more so once dilithium was rendered easy to produce. But since the war that has no longer been possible - and all previously richer deposits are either ruined, empty, or unavailable. Thus the enterprising Bruce Industries established, in 2403, a mining facility in orbit of the planet, bringing in mostly only the boldest miners. They and their families would provide the first settlers on New Kashmir.
Now the Bruce Industries Mining Facility is a far larger complex than it used to be, buoyed up by government subsidies and an increased amount of mercantile interest, and is only flourishing with Starfleet now paying greater attention to the Algedi System.
