First Excalibur Class Starship, lost during its maiden voyage. For many years it was believed that the ship suffered massive damage from it's quantum slipstream drive malfunctioning, then was inevitably destroyed by a Borg sphere about 63 light years from the Sol System.

However in 2403 the more recent USS Excalibur (NX-100001),was sent on a mission by Rear Admiral Donatra to investigate strange energy readings that some of her ships in the Rapid Response Task Force had picked up. When the Excalibur arrived she quickly found her predecessor. After a few hours of rejoicing and finding out what happened from the other Excalibur's crew, the old Excalibur's captain, Captain Dimitri Alexandrovich, stole several engine systems and parts from the new Excalibur's cargo bay.

She was launched as only the second Ark Royal Class battle carrier and the lead ship of the second carrier group in the Federation.

It was soon realized that the man had gone mad and his actions were unrationalized by being stuck out in open space for ten years with no way to go anywhere. Due to some redesigning of the quantum slipstream drive systems since the first Excalibur's launch, the engine parts weren't compatable. When the first Excalibur went to activate her slipstream drive the ship was destroyed. However the current Excalibur was able to transport over 520 out of 723 of their crew.

The entire matter was unanimously agreed to be classified by Starfleet Command and the first Excalibur Class USS Excalibur is still officially considered missing in action.

The USS Excalibur NCC 100001 (formerly NX), an Excalibur Class starship,  is technically the second starship of her class however she is the first of her class to be listed as active on the Starfleet roster. She was named to honor the first Excalibur and prototype for the class which was lost mysteriously during it's maiden voyage and shakedown cruise. Later it was discovered that the ships experimental warp core to service the Quantum Slipstream Drive developed by Doctor Jacob Thatcher had become unstable due to prolonged use of the quantum slipstream speeds as opposed to conventional warp speeds.

History
Although not all was a complete loss as the Starfleet Corps of Engineers had much to learn from the first Excalibur including mismatched system problems. After some time the second hull casing was finally in progress. In 2403 the second ship was finally ready for launch and was put under the command of Jerok, a wise and experienced Romulan who previously served in the Romulan Military and on the Romulan Senate. However it was unknown if any amount of experience could prepare the crew for what they could face.

The ship left dock on June 14th 2403 and left the Sol System successfully under the quantum slipstream drive with a destination of Outpost Four. The ship and all its systems performed fine and began its official active service in Starfleet. In early 2404, with the promotion of Captain Jerok, command of the Excalibur was handed over to the ships first officer, Commander Hennigan. While the ship was under the command of Commander Hennigan it began to suffer severe system problems and was nearly destroyed until it was determined that the problem was the ships quantum slipstream drive. The Excalibur and her advanced propulsion system appeared to be yet another failed experiment similar to the Excelsior Class over a century earlier. The entire system was taken offline and the ship was sent back to Dock 8 of Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards in orbit of Mars, where the ship was originally constructed.

It was determined by the Starfleet Corps of Engineers that the quantum slipstream drive was, for sure, unstable and it was decided that the best course of action was to remove the system. They came to a general consensus that the repeated attempts at breaking the warp 10 barrier was best left for the centuries ahead. However not all was a loss -- the data collected by the Excalibur during her time with the system installed helped the engineers upgrade the ships traditional warp system to allow her to maintain higher warp speeds for longer periods of time before having to 'cool down'.

Captain Jerok was reassigned from his duties as first officer of the Starfleet Rapid Response Task Force to oversee the refit of the Excalibur at Utopia. Once the refit was complete Captain Hennigan was reassigned elsewhere and Captain Jerok was put back in command, reattaining a position as one of the most respected and highest ranking starship captains.

Introduction

The ninth vessel to bear the name Excalibur in Starfleet, the Ark Royal Class USS Excalibur was originally slated to be named the USS Invincible, but was renamed during construction after the destruction of the USS Excalibur NCC-100001. She was launched as only the second Ark Royal Class battle carrier and the lead ship of the second carrier group in the Federation.

Her crew is tasked with heading to the fringes of the Federation and establishing contact with former allies, taking care of problems, and helping with humanitarian efforts all without the help of the rest of Starfleet.

Stationed Fighter Squadrons

The Excalibur houses four squadrons of Valkyrie class fighters. Currently the following squadrons call the Excalibur their home:

History

NCC-100001 (2403 - 2409)

Excalibur Class vessel, and the second to carry the name Excalibur, was launched in 2403 to little fanfare after the loss of the first experimental Excalibur. Was lost in 2409 with all hands. Signaled the end of the Excalibur program.

NX-100000 (2388 - 2388)

Excalibur Class vessel that disappeared on its maiden voyage while testing the experimental Quantum Slipstream Drive. All information around the disappearance is classified, even though rumors persist that the vessel was found and destroyed some years later.

NCC-91363 (2383 - 2386)

Defiant Class vessel under command of Captain Richard Winters from 2383 to 2386. Mainly served as a frontline warship during the initial stages of the Borg War until the vessel was lost in the Battle of Ferenginar. All hands were lost as the vessel sacrificed itself in an attempt to halt the Borg advance.

NCC-26517-A (2376 - 2385)

Galaxy Class starship under the command of Captain Mackenzie Calhoun from 2376 to 2382. Vessel was lost in the Battle of Botulus along with all hands aboard.

NCC-26517 (2350 - 2376)

Ambassador Class starship which served many commanding officers from the mid-24th century until 2376 when it was destroyed.

NCC-2004 (2396 - 2349)

Excelsior Class vessel which served many commanding officers from the late-23rd to mid-24th centuries. It was mothballed and replaced after many years of service.

NCC-1711 (2278 - 2296)

Constitution Refit Class vessel that replaced its predecessor. Was in service during the late 23rd century and was mothballed and replaced after a few years of service.

NCC-1664 (2256 - 2268)

Constitution Class cruiser under the command of Captain Anton Harris in the 2260s. Took part in the M-5 wargames where it was destroyed in 2268 by the USS Enterprise after it (the Enterprise) had been taken over by the M-5 computer. All hands were lost.
