The first starship, also named USS Excalibur, was a failed attempt to perfect the quantum slipstream drive. The ship was believed destroyed and the next Excalibur Class hull was left in space dock for nearly eight years. Eventually the project was revived and succesfully launched and given a shakedown under the command of Commander Jerok.
The Excalibur has been out of dock for almost a year and has already made large contributions to the Federation and Starfleet including re-contact with the Breen, which almost ended in disaster, and dealing with the Cardassians "diplomatically" as well as moving the new Starfleet station Empok Nor to it's new home in orbit of Betazed.
