In Character Overview

Following the devastating troop losses during the Borg War, the Federation’s Marine Corps were absorbed along with several other smaller organizations, into a new Federation Mobile Infantry armed service; encompassing most planetary based assault and protection duties.

This change left a hole that the marines had filled as starship based special recon and assault troops. Starfleet decided to fill that role again by reactivating a little known corp of special ops called Sabre. Standing for S.pecial A.ssault B.oarding R.econ and E.vasion.
