Matthew Beckett

Matthew Beckett is a steward on the independently-owned trading freighter Indigo Horizon. The son of Captain Edward Beckett and his wife Helen, 'Matty', as he is sometimes known, was named for the friend of the family, Rear Admiral Matthew Royce. Expected to have followed in the footsteps of one of his parents, or perhaps his namesake, Matty has instead thus far lived his life through a shadow of academic failure in the search for the next source of amusement.

He seems to have inherited his father's calmness and his mother's confidence, but is rather lacking in much ambition, seeming to consider doing 'odd-jobs' about the Core Worlds to be a valid career. He is looked at by his younger sister Dawn as something of a failure, and even his parents are at their wits' ends in trying to motivate him to make greater plans for his life.
