So you're all astronauts on some sort of... star trek?
This is a page written with an Out of Character Perspective. This means that it is not for direct use in character within Futility's End.
Pages with this template are often design to inform members of Futility's End of something they should know outside of the game.

The Project's History

By 2011, it became obvious that the expanded nature of Futility's End had moved the affiliate well beyond Earth and its nearby solar systems. Until this time, the stories and history of FE were here in the Infobase as they are today, but it sometimes took a lot of digging to find most of that history. Various projects to file the infobase under categories helped significantly, but for a new player, it could still be confusing. For years, there had been no large scale mapping done that was made for public viewing. Many simm CO's had made small maps to keep themselves "on-track" so to speak, but there was just so much information written about Futility's End that it needed a large dynamic map to better inform newer players and even current ones of the status of the Federation and the Universe.

As such, a project was started to bring this universe to life in a two-dimensional form that was easy to read. It was hoped that it could inspire new stories to be told while showing off ten years worth of effort of all the fine simmers that have spent time here creating this wonderful universe. The resulting map is a collection of the material directly written by the players of Futility's End, translated into one image to tie it all together. It continues to evolve and integrate more of FE's vast collection of data into itself.

This image is for common use within the Futility's End simm group, and if you have comments, questions, or new information to add to it, please go to the forum topic located here. We want to keep this map current and your input will greatly assist in this effort. Grenn is the project lead, and can be contacted on the forums under the same name. Use this image for any and all FE needs and please, if you know something needs to be added to it, let us know in the forum thread. We all make this what it is.

Map Information

The map key generally tells the story, but this is the information behind the colors, little bits of information that need to be explained.

The Federation Subspace Network

The transparent blue shows the range of the current Federation subspace network. Any ship traveling beyond this network needs to drop a buoy to contact Starfleet and tap into Starfleet's data network. It was a direct request from Bryan Cash, the FECO to include this on the map. The network's range can generally be considered as the Federation's current borders.

Vulcan

Vulcan is independent and has control of the Alpha Centauri colony as well. They have their own color scheme for this reason. This is not an error. You can read up on it in the Vulcan wiki page.

Independent Worlds (White)

Everything white stands alone. They are their own worlds, or they have not been re-contacted by Starfleet yet. If they have not been re-contacted, they show (Status Unknown) next to or below their name. You'll note a concentration of unknown systems in the "north". There's good reason for this. The Borg came from the north initially. Starfleet has decided to concentrate efforts on the "south", the area least affected by the war, even though it was still hit hard.

The Klingons

Klingons have decided they don't want to be Federation members anymore. They joined to defeat the Borg, but were tired of living under Federation rules. They left to rebuid their empire and have resettled several of their former major worlds that are reflected here.

The Romulans

They are still Federation members, but they retain claims to their old space. Only a small number of systems have been resettled. Most of the former Romulan territory remains unvisited and unknown.

The Ferengi

The Ferengi are actually doing well in wake of the war. They are one of the more stable groups in the quadrant, controlling a small group of systems. Ferenginar is uninhabitable, but New Ferenginar is thriving.

Bajor and the Hyper-Subspace Beacons

Bajor is a major hub, serving almost as its own autonomous Federation. They are full members of the actual Federation once more, but the area is of such critical importance to the reconstruction of the Federation that even with material shortages, Starfleet deployed two massive hyper-subspace beacons to connect Bajor to the rest of the Federation.
