Development of Luna Class
The Luna-Class Development Project was initiated in 2369 in response to the discovery of the Bajoran wormhole, and originally conceived as leading a planned Starfleet wave of deep-space exploration in the Gamma Quadrant. The project was spearheaded by Dr. (Commander) Xin Ra-Havreii, a Starfleet theoretical engineer at Utopia Plantia. Field testing on the prototype U.S.S. Luna was under way by 2372 in the Alpha Quadrant, and construction of the fleet was scheduled to begin the following year. Unfortunately, contact with the Dominion and the subsequent outbreak of hostilities mothballed the project indefinitely, as Starfleet redirected its shipbuilding resources to the production of vessels better suited to combat.
Upon the war's end in late 2375, Dr. Ra-Havreii correctly judged that the Federation's cultural psychology would eventually shift back toward its pre-war ideals, and pushed to have the Luna-class revisited as a major step toward resuming Starfleet's mission of peaceful exploration (even though the class would no longer be assigned exclusively to the exploration of the Gamma Quadrant). Construction of an initial fleet of twelve Luna-class vessels was completed by 2379.
The Luna-class is Starfleet's newest-generation long-range explorer, a starship not built specifically for combat, but like the Constitution-class of the previous century, a vessel designed for a long-term multipurpose mission into uncharted space. Equipped with conventional tactical systems (deflector shields; phasers; quantum torpedoes), the class also boasts state-of-the-art propulsion and cutting-edge scientific equipment, as well as being a test bed for experimental science tech not yet available on other classes.
One of the first Luna class’s of ship was the USS Titan NCC 80102 and commanded by Captain William T. Riker. The Titan was manned by the most varied multispecies crew in Starfleet history, with humans taking up less than 15% of the 350-member crew. The diversity of the crew is intended to facilitate stories that will explore the ways that beings of different cultures, biologies, psychologies, and physical appearances learn how to work together, or fail to, depending on the circumstances they encounter.
Summary of Development
- 2369: Discovery of Bajoran Wormhole prompts Starfleet Command to order the development of a brand new class of exploration based vessel. The ship was to be an ascendant of the Constitution class with being able to cope with long range multi-purpose missions.
- 2372: Doctor Xin Ra-Havreii leads the project and construction of the USS Luna is nearing to completion in 2372. The project is mothballed and the vessel’s construction put on hold as hostile encounters with the Dominion occur.
- 2375: Construction is resumed and twelve vessels of the Luna class are planned to be completed by 2379. USS Luna’s Primary and secondary chassis's now at 100% completion. Computers are delivered for fitting work. Mid year computer cores are activated and ship functions begin to be transferred from station control to ship control. Type-XII phaser arrays installed.
- 2376: USS Luna’s impulse engines delivered and installed. New EPS system finally brought online. Computer cores are activated and ship functions begin to be transferred from station control to ship control. Computer systems are now operating at 80%. Work continues on interior and outer hull sections. Construction of USS Amalthea, USS Titan and USS Rhea begin.
- 2377: USS Luna’s computer system fully self aware and umbilical from the station are cut as the ship become self sufficient. Stardrive section completed with final attachment of navigational deflector array. Bridge module attached to primary hull. Warp stress coating is applied. Warp Core passes Review Three and it tested to 100% peak.
- 2378: On 27th June 2378 USS Luna is officially commissioned by Starfleet during a brief ceremony. Bridge Plaque is put in pride of place and Captain Mike Lowrey takes command of the ship. USS Luna is ordered to begin shakedown cruises estimate to last one year.
- 2379: On 10th December 2379 USS Titan is officially commissioned by Starfleet during a brief ceremony. Bridge Plaque is put in pride of place and Captain William T.Riker takes command of the ship. USS Titan is ordered to begin shakedown cruises estimate to last one year and to lead a relief task force to Romulus.
- 2403: On 21st June 2403 USS Ulysses is officially commissioned by Starfleet during a brief ceremony. Bridge Plaque is put in pride of place and Captain Andrea O'Connor takes command of the ship. The vessel is placed in to drydock at Oakland shipyards waiting crew, additional maintenances and assignment orders.
- 2410: On January 7, 2410 USS Ticonderoga is completed at Utopia Planitia Shipyards and launched during a brief ceremony. The vessel is assigned to the Starfleet Re-Exploration Initiative for extensive Deep Space assignments.
Additional Information:
Currently there are 2 in service with 4 building per year. 17 were lost during the Borg War
Currently docked at Oakland shipyards awaiting re-crewing, refit and overhaul of propulsion.
