Introduction
Robert Lee Martens is the Commanding Officer aboard the USS Excalibur and commander of the Excalibur Carrier Task Group. He overseas all operations aboard both the Excalibur and within the greater task group. Known as Bob only to his closest friends and Spammer to only those who knew him as a pilot, he is known as a tactician first and foremost and has a penchant for the unconventional.

Appearance
Steely-eyed and clean-shaven, he is an intimidating figure even though his stature and build is quite "average" for a human of his age. He keeps his brown hair short as to not be bothered with having to take care of it much.
Personality
Uncompromising and unwavering are the two words tossed about most often when speaking about Captain Martens. He is fiercely loyal to his friends, which can get him into trouble more often than not. He carries a grudge on his shoulder from The Borg War, but who doesn't? He is a fierce tactician with a lack of diplomatic flare so it seen by some who are less impressed with his other skills as nothing more than a worn-our warrior even though he is only in his 40s.
He is not someone you wish to cross, but also someone who is generally untrusting by default of those he is not aware of or feels that he understands their motivations.
History
Early Life (2369 - 2382)
Born to two high-ranking Starfleet officers Bob, as he is known to his friends and family, grew up on Alpha Centauri because his parents were originally stationed there. However, they did move around quite a bit as his parents moved through the ranks and to different postings. He would spend time on starbases, starships, outposts, colonies ... anywhere that his parents were needed.
He grew to love Starfleet and travel from these early experiences, and he still does to this day because of it. However, the beginning of The Borg War changed many things.
The Borg War (2382 - 2398)
At first it was only rumblings, but it didn't take long for the teenaged Martens to figure out what was going on. Very quickly his parents were summoned back to Earth to serve on various committees to try and figure out what to do with the newly resurgent Borg threat.
For a boy approaching 18, it was a simple matter. He enlisted as soon as he was able. The year was 2387 and the war had already been raging and terrorizing billions of beings for years. The thought of not enlisting and not engaging the Borg was beyond his ability to even come up with an excuse and so he cruised and quickly as he could through the Star Fighter Command flight school and found himself onboard the USS Cerberus heading to his first assignment on Starbase 375. This was 2391, and things were not looking good.
He joined up with SFS-10, the Vigilantes, and was given the call-sign Spammer. Not even having time to acclimate himself, he and his squadron watched helplessly as Starbase 375 was destroyed and was the only member of his squadron to be picked up by the USS Cerberus. He was sent back to Earth for debriefing and then assigned again to the reformed SFS-10. Reassigned to Starbase 565, there he took over as Squadron XO and in 2392, took part in the ultimately-futile defense of Starbase 565 at Wolf 359 but they bugged out only after Rear Admiral Ryan ordered them off and destroyed it. As what was left of the fleet limped back home, the squadron received new orders and was assigned to Utopia Plantia where they were successful in defending the fleet yards.
The squadron was mobilized for the attack on the Borg Shipyards in Cardassian space where the Squadron CO was was lost in combat. Captain Martens was given command of the squadron after the battle and was permanently given the command of the squadron shortly thereafter. Then began their "exile" to Earth as forces were brought ever-more inward to protect Sol and the seat of Federation power.
Then came the Battle of Sol and the chaos that the squadron was a part of. While a few of the squadron survived, it was decided to disband the squadron after the battle and he was reassigned as the CO of STS-09, the Crimson Aces.
Aftermath (2398 - Present)
During the entirety of the war, his parents stayed on Earth, acting as valuable counsel for Federation and Starfleet diplomats on how best to handle the many and varied situations. Even after the Battle of Sol, another major battle where he distinguished himself well, he was one of the lucky ones to not lose family. However, he knew many who had and it was difficult to deal with all of the loss around him, even as he had his own family alive.
STS-09 was tasked with patrolling the space directly around Sol, and later tasked with patrolling the outer parts of The Field.
Spammer was in the air when the USS Annapolis was pulled into The Field and ... who knows what happened. Shortly after, a call went out into Star Fighter Command for willing participants to undergo Fleet Command Academy and get a billing on a Starfleet vessel in preparation for possibly serving on the next generation of carriers. Then-Commander Martens asked to be transferred to the program and took to fleet command quite easily.
Upon graduation, he was assigned to the USS Tarawa as the Executive Officer where it took some time for the crew to accept a former pilot as their XO. However, he did finally settle in and served well, setting himself up for whatever Starfleet might have for him in the future.
In 2410 the perfect command came available with the imminent lunach of the USS Excalibur and the forming of the Excalibur Carrier Task Group. He is now preparing for the unassuming launch of his own ship with his own crew to undertake a hugely important humanitarian and support mission throughout all of currently-explored Federation territory.
