Star Fighter Command
From FEInfobase
Starfighter Command was the military wing of Federation formed in the aftermath of the Borg War in the early 25th century.Contents |
Overview
The Starfighter Command consists of squadrons of starfighters and minor patrol boats and tends to assign its units to individual outposts, bases, and colonies for their prelimary and standard defence. On occasion, squadrons are assigned to Starfleet vessels as a means to supplement their combat capabilities, particularly for explorative and offensive duties.
Originally established as a minor wing of Starfleet itself, Starfighter Command drew its personnel from both naval and marine pilots. After several years of success, it was proposed by the Executive Branch and passed through the Council (in 2403) to set up the organisation as an independent military wing, with the same freedoms afforded the newly formed Federation Mobile Infantry and Starfleet itself.
Under the command of Chief Marshall Castor Wolfram, Starfighter Command maintains approximately two dozen squadrons. These were originally the dozen squadrons assigned to Starfleet and the Earth Defence Force, most assigned to bases and carriers where they could conduct patrols of the Sol System. It was exceptional for a squadron to be assigned to active duty on board a starship. The success of the flexibility of the Angry Apes and the demonstration of the efficiency of a starfighter squadron in rapid response gave birth to a more sophisticated and versatile range of postings for squadrons.
When on a base or colony, a squadron is usually self-sufficient, with its own maintenance crew and chain of command, and cooperating with local forces to see to the defence of their assignment. If assigned to a Starfleet vessel, the squadron is usually more reliant upon the ship and its crew, and is generally integrated with the chain of command, a holdover from when the two organisations were one.
Order of Battle
The multiple Wings of Starfighter Command were originally more indicative of the assignment of the squadron, such as Alpha Wing's involvement in the Vulcan threat and Beta Wing's assignment to border defence. But as time has drawn on and the squadrons have changed and developed, such overall mandates have been impractical. Squadrons underwent experiences which made them suitable for assignments outside of their wing's mandate; as such, the wings have simply become administrative oversights instead of larger combat units. The independence of an individual squadrons remains sacrosanct in Starfighter Command.

- The word strikecraft revolves around any craft devoted exclusive to combat, these involves fighters, bombers and assault runabouts. Anything beyond a runabout is not considered by a strike craft.
