Biography
James was born on November 18, 2357 to Albert Nickles and Jessica Nickles, James was their only child. As the only son to a Starfleet Fighter Pilot and a Starfleet Marine Colonel, James was often raised by friends of his parent unit when they were called away.
For much of James younger years, he only saw his mother and father when they were on leave, even then he understood that when your parents are member of Starfleet sometimes you come second in their life. He also got into a lot of fight when he was younger because his classmates would make fun of how he didn't have any real parents as they were never around. In 2367, Brigadier General Jessica Nickles came home to find her son bruised from another fighter, it was at that point that she retired from the Corp to raise her son.
In 2370, James and his mother learn that his father was killed on the USS Odyssey when it was rammed by a Jem'Hadar suicide attack, thus leaving the two alone.
When James turned eighteen years old in 2375, he applied for admission to Starfleet Academy. When asked to list his major by an advisor, he chose to follow after his father in Aerospace Operations. James was barely in his class for three months before he was pulled into active duty on the Nebula-class, USS Soong.
During the Second Battle of Chin'toka, the USS Soong was destroyed with the rest of the Federation fleet, leaving every fighter that was launched without a desk to land. It became a fight to hold back the tides as fighter pilots tired to protect the escape pods from wandering shots.
When he learned of the attack on Earth, James feared for his mother and as soon as he reached a station. She had sent him a message telling him she was find and at her sisters' house in Canada.
In the final battle of the war, James led his squadron to the aide of Klingon and Romulan ships that were being overrun with Dominion Fighters. James would not land his bird on the deck of the ship until all his people were accounted for dead or alive, even when threaten with a court marshal, James told his Captain on an open comm channel, "You can court marshal me, when I have all my people, Captain."
Even as the youngest fighter pilot in Starfleet that quote landed him a place in the Academy.
After the battle was all said and done, James only lost three pilots and even then he tractor their craft back to the ship after gathering their bodies. No sooner had his feet touch the deck he found Captain Ashlee Rowe in his face. He was prepared for the court marshal, and when she reached for his collar he knew he was getting demoted, instead he heard her call him a Lieutenant for his actions of bravery when it came to defending the Alliance ships, but noted that she would put down ten days in the brig as time served.
At the close of the war, James was assigned to Starfleet Academy as a guest speaker due to the fact at the tender age of nineteen, he held the rank of Lieutenant and held the position of Acting Squadron Leader on the Akira-class, USS Akira due to the fact that there was a short supply of fighter pilots. As the youngest Lieutenant Fighter pilot, James sometimes acted as the go between for cadets and professors.
In 2378, James was called back into active duty when pirates began to perform raids on world that were rebuilding. Lieutenant Nickles was place in command of the Nineteenth Squadron, under the Commander of Captain S'uol of the Third Fighter Wing.
Over the curse of the next six year, James would rise through the ranks of the Aerospace Operations as one of the foremost pilots in the entire Corps. However in late 2384, he would come crashing down when during the course of a Starfleet Intelligence operations, he would comes to blow with Commodore Jessie Martin when the Commodore began to risk the entire air wing to secure a biological weapon against superior numbers. When it became apparent that the Air Wing were outnumber and outmatched, then-Lieutenant Commander Nickles ordered all of his birds to return home against the wishes of the Commodore.
It has been reported that the Commodore struck him first, before James began to beat the man to the ground, it took over five security officer to pull him off the Flag Officer.
However in 2385, James got an early release from Hawkeye Prison to become the Chief Flight Control Officer for the USS Vernon, one of the front line ship during the Borg War. During the War, James would be injury several, but never left his post unless ordered.
