Introduction
Jean Francis Chandler is the Executive Officer aboard the USS Excalibur and commander of the 2nd Battalion, 1st Mobile Infantry Brigade. Most people address the colonel as Chandler, his closest friends refer to him by his schoolyard nickname and later chosen moniker of Tank. Those who knew him would tell you that Tank was a loyal and painfully honest friend and colleague; though he frequently finds himself standing just across the line of what is marked as regulation he is diligent and caring.

Gray haired and gray eyed, Tank cuts a subtly powerful figure. Not bulky or large by any standard, but strong and built cleanly.
Personality
Multiple psychiatric evaluations, fitness reports and public records paint an interesting dichotomy of Lt. Colonel Chandler. While everyone who has served with him swears by the colonel, he has not been mindful or tactful in his dealings throughout his career with those in his way. Some would say he is simple, others soften it to straight forward, those closest to him know the subtlety that resides beneath his simple exterior. He will never ask someone to do something he wouldn’t be willing to do himself, but he has also had no issue committing men to the depth when their sacrifice would save untold more. If that has made him cold and uncaring to his political enemies then he doesn’t care, he doesn’t ask their permission to do right by his friends, those serving with and under him and most importantly, the Federation.
History
Early Life (2354 - 2372)
Like many youths who join the service, Jean was born to two career Starfleet officers. Lieutenant Commander Molly Chandler was Chief Medical Officer on the USS St. Petersburg, her husband Major Walter Chandler, was the company commander of the St. Petersburg detachment of the Starfleet Marine Corps.
After Jean was born the couple decided to not raise their child amongst the hectic and oft times dangerous life aboard a Starship, Molly Chandler accepted a position on Mars while Walter stayed with the St. Petersburg. At age 5 Jean was left with his godfather on Mars while his mother went to visit his father on the St. Petersburg while it was docked at a space station. It was impossible to anticipate the attack by a splinter group of seemingly rogue Romulan pirates, the St. Petersburg was crippled in the opening fight and the raiding parties were barely repelled by the marine and security forces. Molly and Walter Chandler were among the fallen.
Orphaned, Jean was entered into his godfather’s school as his father had before him, a highly decorated and prestigious private military academy for boys, called the Centurion School. It was here a few years later that Jean would earn the nickname “The Tank” when he single-handedly charged a heavily fortified enemy position, sustaining multiple wounds but successfully completing the objective of the simulation.
The Service (2372 - 2382)
At age 18 Tank made the decision he had known he would make his entire life, he received his test scores from his finals accepted his position as a marine cadet in the Starfleet Marine Corps.
He surpassed most of his comrades and frequently was in the top 1% of candidates, despite age or year; yet Tank frequently found himself drawn into political science and philosophy classes. Most people tended to dismiss him because he was generally quiet, but after some time he began to come out of his shell and speak up.
Upon graduation Tank was assigned to the USS Calvary to lead a platoon of Starfleet Marines under the ultimate command of Lieutenant Black. After 18 months aboard the Calvary Tank was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and took over command of the company.
After another year and a half Tank is promoted and reassigned to the USS Eclipse as company commander under the command of Captain Yuri Denton. The two officers quickly became close friends for they were both often on the wrong side of bureaucracy and politics. Thankfully Denton was much more attune to these things and helped navigate the young marine officer through the thicket.
Soon Tank would look back fondly at those years when his biggest worry was if he or Denton would end up in the brig for disobeying some petty order or not.
The Borg War (2382 - 2398)
When the Borg began their campaign of terror the Eclipse was on the far side of the Federation.
Years go by without the Eclipse seeing a major conflict, the vessel and her marines are often sent through the quadrant on escort duty. While this is galling to both marine and Captain alike, they recognize the strategic value of the role they are playing.
In 2384 the Eclipse is destroyed when ramming into a small borg vessel during an ambush of a supply convoy. Chandler is promoted to Major and recalled to Mars help shore up losses in the core worlds and assigned to the staff of a prominent Marine General, his panache for flying in the face of regulations has actually garnered him some respect at this point. During his time between 2384 and 2392, Jean develops the tactic of sending small marine units to worlds that can’t be evacuated to train and advise local forces and civilians. At this point in the war, defeat is never far away and Chandler’s policies are implemented quietly to avoid panic. These training missions are not designed to actually defend any worlds but to limit resources and perhaps slow the enemy and in the very best case perhaps even if Sol is to fall, humanity will fight on somewhere else.
Following on the coat tails of his prominent General, Tank is reassigned along with his entire staff to Earth to serve as an adjunct tactical advisor. During his time the Major also begins teaching classes at Starfleet Academy, specializing in warfare and strategy. This time is troubling for Tank because as a marine he feels his duty is to serve in the fight somewhere not teach cadets, but he realizes that each cadet he instructs successfully is a force multiplier on the battlefield that may turn the tide.
During the battle for Sol Tank is reassigned to the flagship of his General, the ship is boarded and badly damaged, Tank suffers multiple injuries before being physically carried away to an escape pod that manages to make it back to the surface when so many didn’t.
Aftermath (2398 - Present)
Following the war Tank is promoted to Lt. Colonel and spends the next few years as a military advisor to a committee overseeing the dismantling of the Starfleet Marine Corps and it’s re-incorporation into the Federation Mobile Infantry. He and a select group of other marine officers hand over their ceremonial swords in the final decommissioning ceremony, marking the end of the storied Starfleet Marine Corps.
Accepting his commission as a Lt. Colonel in the Federation Mobile Infantry, Tank set out to educate a new stock of warrior to fill the shoes of those we had lost. Many men and women would be needed to secure humanity in the time to come.
After a dispute with the Commandant over curriculum, Lt. Colonel Chandler seeks reassignment and due to his record and expertise is given command of the FMI Battalion assigned to the USS Excalibur. Chandler is quickly asked by Captain Bob Martens to step in to fill the vacant Executive Officer position after the Excalibur’s previous mission.
