Background

Keir was born in Irving, Scotland in 2361. His father, Colin, was a Starfleet Officer serving on Earth and his mother, Angela, was a botanist. Keir grew up in a very family orientated environment with his older brother, Richard, and twin sister Hannah.

From and early age he loved shuttles and things that could fly. He started to mess about with shuttles and learned to fly all sorts of craft. At the age of 16 he joined Starfleet wanting to become a fighter pilot.

After training, Keir graduated 6th in his class, having earned the callsign "Preserver" because he would do all he could to save his fellow pilots.

His first year on the Denver was fairly quiet. There were a few incidents with pirates, but nothing major.

This changed in 2382 when the Borg attacked. Although he wasn't involved in any battles that year with the Borg, he was drilled to be ready to fight and possibly die to defend the Federation.

In 2384, Keir was promoted to Lt j.g. and assigned to the Yamato as the Denver was taken out of service for refits in case the Borg came for the Federation.

Two years later, Keir had his first taste of combat against the Borg at the Battle of Bajor. During the Battle, Keir disobeyed a direct order to retreat and regroup in an attempt to cover a member of his squad. His fighter was hit by a lump of hull from a starship destroyed by the Borg. When the Dominion arrived, a Dominion vessel picked up the damaged fighter.

Keir lost his right arm at the shoulder, his left arm from the elbow and his right leg at the knee. A number of his vital organs were replaced with artificial replacements and several of his ribs were replaced as was his right eye. He was given a Purple Heart for his injuries, the Distinguished Flying Cross for his actions during the battle and demoted for disobeying a direct order that resulted in him nearly being killed.

Keir was transferred to Starfleet Medical on Earth after being patched up on a hospital ship. His injuries were so sever at first few believed he would live, and if he did they doubted he'd ever walk properly again, let alone fly.

Despite this, he recovered quite quickly. Many noted the fact that he would joke about the seriousness of his condition. At this time his childhood friend Emma came to visit him in hospital. He was unaware, however, she was working for Starfleet as a counsellor for victims of the War.

Over the course of the ensuing months, Keir took heart from Emma's visits. His wounds healed quickly, and even the marks on his face were able to be almost totally healed.

However a nurse let slip that Emma working with Starfleet (Keir was aware that she was a counsellor) and War victims. He assumed that he was just a project, but Emma told him she'd asked to work with him and had come to really care from him.

In late 2387, Keir had recovered enough to leave medical and joined a fighter research group on Jupiter Station that was doing research into how to use injured pilots. His prosthetics were basic and had no "skin" coverings. He kept them covered after a few people mistook him for a Borg Drone.

The group was experimenting with mind interface technology taken from Borg technology. The idea was that, via artificial implants, injured pilots could fly fighter using the power of their mind. Emma took a position as a civilian counsellor to help the pilots deal with the stress and to be with Keir.

At first everything went well. The technology seemed to work, but on the first proper test things went badly wrong. Of 24 test pilots, 12 injured and 12 given implants for the test, only 6 of each survived. 3 suffered severe neural burn out and died, 4 were left brain damaged and 5 lost the use of their bodies; 3 fused to the fighter and were trapped in the computer, the other 2 suffered "locked in" syndrome.

Keir was one of the few pilots that stayed on the programme after the disastrous first attempts. He survived unharmed and began to regain his capabilities of flight without the interface.

Keir's father, Colin, was a Captain commanding the USS Horatio. He was killed during the Battle of Trill.

In 2389 Keir and Emma married. The same year Keir tested the first break through interface. The device could be used safely for 30 hours and allowed the pilot to fly and fire weapons, but they still had to look at consoles for information.

Emma and Keir's first children were born in 2391. James and Laura were born on Earth where Emma stayed for the rest of the War with the children.

Keir fought at the Second Battle of Wolf 359 with the remaining 7 other pilots from the programme. They saw little action, but all escaped back to Earth.

The programme moved to Earth that year, only months before Jupiter Station was destroyed. Keir enjoyed being back with his family.

In 2395 the programme was closed down due to a lack of resources, however, the interface had been perfected for Keir. The interface in his fighter had two settings; the old one that he was now excellent at using and a more advanced setting. The advanced setting allowed Keir to "see" with the fighter's sensors and be one with the computer. This, however, can only be used for just over an hour, but allows Keir more control and allows him to fly better than thought possible.

After the programme closed, Keir was assigned to the USS T'Plantha. He was deployed at Alpha Centuri. His second daughter, Kirsty, was born in 2398.

When the Borg invaded the Sol System, Keir was part of the massive defense force. Despite his up beat nature, he was resigned to the idea he was going to die.

He didn't see action until the 3rd day where his squadron were to fill in gaps in the lines while the capital ships moved into position. Keir remained in the fight for almost the rest of the battle, stopping only to rearm and for quick refreshments during that time.

By the end of the battle, he was the only member of his squad left alive. His fighter was heavily damaged and he required extensive repairs to his prosthetic limbs. He then served in the Earth Defense Force, operation out of the old RAF base Kinloss in Northern Scotland near Inverness.

Keir was awarded the Earth Defense Service Medal for his service to the Federation in the Battle of Sol.

When the Star Fighter Command was set up in 2403, Keir was assigned with the rank of Lieutenant to SFS-15 as a training instructor. Keir enjoyed the stability he now had as it allowed him time with his family that the War had prevented him doing.

In 2306 Keir was promoted to Captain and assigned to the Jolly Rogers on Threshold as the XO. Emma and his three children joined him.

Personality

Keir is almost a stereotypical pilot; an out going risk taker than seems so sure of himself. However, this is mostly a front when in the cockpit. Off duty he is fairly reserved and quiet, although he's not against the idea of a bit of a wild party if there's one going.

In the cockpit, Keir is a superb pilot. He is exceedingly good at his job and very protective of the other pilots he serves with, which earned him the call sign "Preserver" at the Academy.

Usually calm, cool and collected, Keir does have a bit of a temper when it finally gets loose. He is not prone to shouting angrily tending towards cold fury on the rare occasions he gets anger. When angry he slips into his natural, heavier Scottish accent.

Strengths: Various prosthetics proved increased strength and durability; his cybernetic right eye gives him superior vision; excellent pilot, especially when using his fighter interface; very loyal to his squad.

Weaknesses: Prosthetics need regular maintenance, bit reckless, nightmares about the Borg War, can be very stubborn
