Personal Background
Prior to 2403
The Lastin family has always been a family of pilots. Dating from the days of World War I on Earth the Lastin family had members flying aircraft and spacecraft in every major conflict involving the human race. It is as such no surprise that Mike Lastin began learning how to fly small suborbital spacecraft as early as age four. By ten he was practicing with the shuttle pilots aboard the USS Sarisota, which was commanded by his father. He would often take a runabout out and practice his flight manuevers. By thirteen he could outmanuver most of the shuttle pilots. At sixteen his father finally let him fly the Sarisota. It was on these incredible skills and his fathers support that he joined the academy at age eighteen.
By this time the war with the Borg was well underway, and had been for ten years. Starfleet needed officers. Mike's advanced flight skills and excellent grades allowed him to graduate a year early from the academy. He spent three years as the flight controller for the Defiant Class USS Halladay before piloting the ship along side his fathers ship the Sarisota to engage the Borg attempting to enter the Sol System. During that battle he witnessed the losses of hundreds of Starfleet Officers and the vessels they served on. The one that sticks most in his mind is seeing the USS Sarisota burning in space before drifting into a collision with the USS Stellar Winds, destroying both ships. With that collision he witnessed the deaths of his mother, father, and oldest brother.
When the battle finally ended he was numb, he'd been going on pure instinct for hours. It was only then that he realized the Halladay had been badly wounded. He looked around the bridge. The XO had left early on to assist damage control teams, a conduit had fallen and crushed the CO, the tactical officers console had exploded killing him. The other officers were to busy keeping their stations running to take over any stations. He knew he had to have, but didn't remember transfering tactical control to his console. The other crew members on the bridge looked at him and realized he'd some how gotten them out alive. The crew of that ship kept her in one piece and all Mike did was drive and shoot. He spent another two years with the Halladay before being transfered to Deep Space One.
After to 2403
Michael has since then been the main pilot of the Enterprise-F since his assignment there.
