Old Bio
Personal Description
No longer the fresh faced egotistical pilot that graduated Starfleet Academy, Taylor has become a war wearied cynical member of the Starfleet Admiralty. More at home on the Bridge of the Reagan than in a meeting room he still attempts to do what he feels is best for Starfleet and the Federation even if that meets with disapproval from other people.
Once devoted to his family, Taylor hasn’t mentioned them since they disappeared in 2303 if pushed on the issue he ignores it.
Although usually quite and amiable person, Taylor is not above using his rank and position to bring people in to line if he needs too.
Biographical History
A former Star Fighter Pilot turned Commanding Officer; Dan’s career really began in Bravo Fleet’s Task Force 9 in 2379. At the time Task Force 9 was under the command of Rear Admiral Nerwal, who offered Taylor command of two ships an aging Ambassador Class ship or an equally ancient Excelsior Class ship. The decision wasn’t an easy one for Dan to make, both ships appealed to him in different ways. In the end the Ambassador Class Vessel won over and Taylor took command of the USS Ronald Reagan on the 1st February.
Months later Taylor began his move up the ranks in Bravo Fleet, replacing his Task Group Commanding Officer in Task Group Gamma. It wasn’t long before Taylor moved Task Forces entirely, Rear Admiral Rico of Task Force 17 requested Taylor serve as his Task Force Executive Officer. Throughout this time Taylor stayed in command of the Ronald Reagan, despite his initial misgivings with the name he grew to love the ship and its history.
In 2380 He was approached by Admiral Wolfe who offered him the position of Task Force Commanding Officer for Task Force 86, Bravo Fleet’s Active Incursion Division. As TFCO Taylor really came in to his element, finally he found himself in the position to fix the issues he had seen in other Task Forces. His first order of business was to replace the current Task Force Executive Officer with someone better suited to his command style, surprisingly he chose the commander of KDB K’Hare ech’ to serve in that role. Shortly after his re-assignment K’Hare was promoted to totlh after Taylor’s discussions with Fleet Admiral Sorac, Dan felt quite rightly that K’Hare was already deserving of the rank to go with his position.
The pair ran TF86 together for another year before the Borg’s first incursion in to the Alpha quadrant. Almost immediately Task Force 86 was mobilised to head off the Borg advance and give Starfleet the time to prepare, although the entire Task Force knew they were likely going to their deaths they ventured in to Krazzel space.
Of the 17 vessels, only 3 survived the encounter intact enough to make their way back to Starfleet Controlled space. Each of those ships were decommissioned shortly afterwards due to battle damage, their hulls placed in storage until Starfleet could devote the resources to refitting them. The Reagan was also lost during this battle almost with all hands, Only Taylor, his command crew and a handful of other crew members survived; they were forced to spend weeks drifting in escape pods until they were rescued by USS Monitor.
The safe return of Taylor and members of his crew gave Starfleet a much needed moral boost, in order to capitalise on this Starfleet ordered the next ship off of the line to be commissioned as the Ronald Reagan – A. 3 weeks later Rear Admiral Taylor took command of the Galaxy Class USS Ronald Reagan NCC 26306 – A, he and his crew returned to the front line and met up with Task Force 9. For the next few months and years the Reagan floated between Task Groups and Task Force’s helping out where it was needed, often undertaking missions Starfleet deemed unnecessary.
Without realising it Taylor began earning himself a reputation as a maverick, often ignoring the local Chain of Command he operated within the confines of his original orders to help where he could. His actions gained him as many enemies as it did supporters, for every Commanding Officer who admired him another wanted him court-martialled. The only thing that kept him in command was the War; Starfleet needed him more than they needed to remove him from the Fleet.
The turning point in Taylor’s career came with the evacuation of Starbase 565; the base itself was a small Regula 2 class facility a few hundred light years from Sol which had originally been set up to help shore up the Sol defence perimeter years before from Romulan or Klingon attacks. Although the crew and civilian population of the station were rescued, it was done at great loss both personally and professionally. A full third of the Reagan’s crew lost their lives holding back the Borg as long as they could and Taylor’s best friend Master Chief Petty Officer Jeffery Jefferson lost his leg as it became trapped under a lowering security barrier – to make the situation worse the Borg attempted to assimilate him as his leg was crushed this left Jefferson with the pain of loosing his leg and feeling it assimilated at it happened.
After the 565 Incident Starfleet Command chose to keep Taylor in the Sol system in an attempt to curtail his gung ho activities, after a Promotion to Vice Admiral he took command of Sol One, the task group assigned to the Sol defensive line. Unfortunately for Starfleet it didn’t help much, Dan just restricted his activities to helping those within his range. The Reagan and other members of Sol One routinely left the defence perimeter to rescue Starfleet or Civilian ships from Borg vessels. With each successful rescue Taylor’s notoriety within the fleet and the Federation grew to the point where Starfleet Command could not move to remove him without facing a backlash.
5 Years later Taylor was promoted to Admiral and given command of a larger number of ships in the Sol system; by this time Starfleet had pulled almost every Task Group back to Sol in order to repel the Borg’s final attack. During the Battle for Sol Taylor and his Task Group was tasked with leading the Borg to Utopia Planitia, they accomplished this task barely. During the battle the Reagan was abandoned due to battle damage and Taylor spent the rest of the battle onboard Space dock marshalling the fleet and fleet operations.
In 2398 Taylor found himself place in charge of the remaining ships in Starfleet, the first fleet as it was collectively known became responsible for the protection of the Sol system from attack by any foreign force – Borg or otherwise. In 2301 this fleet officially became known as the Earth Defence Force, it wasn’t until late 2301 that the Reagan re-launched from dry dock following an extensive but slow refit.
Taylor only stayed in command of the EDF for a touch under two years, in 2303 he found himself promoted to the position of Starfleet Commander in Chief after the untimely death of Jean Luc Picard. It was not a position he wanted to take up, yet he found himself forced to do so by Vice President Edward Jellico. At some point during 2303 Taylor became a pawn in Jellico’s plans for a stronger Federation, exactly when is unknown.
