Historical Significance

Wolf 359 is a red dwarf star located 8 light years from Earth. It was the site of the Battle of Wolf 359, one of the most brutal defeats in Federation history up to that time. In 2366, a single Borg Cube engaged and defeated an armada of 40 Federation starships that had been hastily assembled to defend Earth. 39 were destroyed outright, and the last (the USS Endeavour) was severely damaged. The death toll was nearly 11,000, though it will never be known for certian which of these were assimilated instead of being killed.

The battle lasted approximately twenty four minutes from first shot to last.

Borg War

In 2381, Starbase 565 was moved to the Wolf 359 system to act as a supply base.

For the duration of the Borg War, Wolf 359 did not see any action. Not having any planets worth much for resources, it was sidestepped by both sides except for periodic visits by Federation ships for repair and resupply.

In the wake of the war however, the system was seen as a stepping stone to expand further towards the center of the galaxy. Most exploration was taking place from Sol towards the outer rim, while this direction was largely unexplored.

Starbase 565 which had been practically abandoned since the war's conclusion was re-staffed in 2405 to act as a forward base for the Starfleet Re-Exploration Initiative. The base is occupied and active from only Deck 1-39, with decks 40-180 inactive and without life support, power, or internal sensors. A long-term project is planned to detach Decks 40-180 from the rest of the base and reclaim the materials for salvage purposes.
