History:
Zan was born in Jenva City on Betazed in 2355 to a Betazoid father and human mother. His father, Zenj, was employed at a Betazoid corporation to mediate business deals. His mother, Susan, was a Judge in the Starfleet JAG, Betazed Section. At 18 in 2376, he entered Starfleet Academy where he graduated 4 years later with honors in starship systems engineering. His first assignment out of the Academy was at the Avalon Fleet Yards in the Raeyan Sector in the role as an apprentice design engineer for modifications to existing vessels. For five years he grew in responsibility and rank. 2382 saw the rise of the Federation’s nemesis, the Borg, and right in their backyard. AFY leaped into emergency action and began planning for a long siege by the Borg at some point. Zan lead one of several teams to begin converting some of the asteroids AFY was nestled in into boltholes where supplies could be stored and people could flee to in the event of a Borg incursion. The asteroids were chosen for their mineral content that would aid in shielding them from the Borg sensors. They didn’t act fast enough, though. Soon the Borg were entering the Raeyan system. Zan and his team were in the final stages of boring out a large asteroid, big enough to put a runabout in, when they swarmed into the Raeyan system. They did the best they could to hide from the Borg, surviving for days in the runabout on minimal power, as they listened to the pleas for help from AYF and Starbase Bravo. The pleas became fewer and far between. Although the two installations fought mightily, they eventually fell. Running low on supplies, he and his team made a desperate run for the 4th of July Nebula, where they thought they could hide from the Borg sensors. Their desperate flight paid off and they shook off their pursuers, though their runabout was badly damaged. It took them a year to return to Federation space, sneaking from world to world all the while trying to keep their fragile runabout operational. They were debriefed by Starfleet on Kaleb, the nearest Federation world, in 2383. Zan was then transferred to Starbase 565, where he worked on designing and implementing refits and upgrades to existing starships and building new ones to prepare them for war as the Federation gathered its defenses for the approaching Borg armada. There, he also found love in Dr. Keranda Madel, a Betazoid xenosociologist based there. Her and her team studied cultures that were on the verge of developing warp drive and provided guidance to the Federation on when and if First Contact should take place. For five years he worked furiously to help prepare the defense of the Federation, but also deepened his relationship with Keranda. They decided to marry when they could return to Betazed. But the Borg only kept coming. System after system was devoured and they moved on for more. When the Federation repulsed the Borg at Bajor and Ferenginar, time had run out and Zan was pressed into service aboard several starships and saw several combat actions. He left Starbase 565 for his shipboard assignments with a promise to his betrothed to return for her and marry her on Betazed as tradition demanded. His last transfer was to the Ark Royal in 2390 as a last minute replacement for another engineer who contracted Rigelian flu, which is extremely contagious, thus cementing his fate to be among the survivors of Ark Royal's destruction.
Personality:
Zan was usually an outgoing person before the crash. The deaths of half the crew tore through the empathic part of his mind and he fell into a psychic abyss. He is now barely responsive to any outside stimulus as he tries to shore up the psychic damn he has built to deal with the tsunami of emotion and death. He only now has built the wall strong enough to interact with the outside world, and even then only limitedly. Zan has no idea what his bride-to-be’s fate was and he presumes she is now among the countless dead or assimilated. Zan will be introverted and require a lot of time to himself to repair the cracks in his psychic damn and keep the last thread of his sanity from unraveling.

2377-2382: Assigned to Avalon Fleet Yards/Raeyan Sector as an apprentice starship systems engineer. His duties were to aid in the design and implementation of refits and upgrades to ships in drydock.
2382: The Borg attack the Raeyan system. Zan was part of an engineering team boring out asteroids to be used as boltholes to keep supplies and be used as shelters when/if the Borg come. The Borg fleet passed them over, not detecting them due to the natural shielding provided by the asteroid’s materials. He and the team managed to escape the system in their runabout and they hide in the 4th of July Nebula. It takes them a year to return to Federation space.
2383: Zan and what’s left of his engineering team finally arrive in Federation space. Once debriefed by Starfleet, Zan is reassigned to Starbase 565 as a structural engineer to modify existing ships and building new ones to combat the Borg. Zan meets a Betazoid woman and falls in love with her. They planned to marry when the fight with the Borg is over.
2388-2390- Zan is pressed into shipboard service. He serves aboard several starships as an engineer and is in several engagements with the Borg.
2390- Conditions worsen for the Federation and her allies. Zan is assigned as an engineer aboard the USS Ark Royal.
2390- The Ark Royal crashlands on an unknown world. Now.

Notes:
Zan has inherited empathic powers from his father, though not as strong as a pureblood Betazoid. He can read surface thoughts, though he cannot go deeper than that without intense concentration. He can pick up a person with strong thoughts or emotions out of a crowd.
