Sabre Corps

Following the devastating troop losses during the Borg War the Federation’s Marine Corps was absorbed along with several other smaller organizations into a new Federation Mobile Infantry armed service encompassing most planetary based assault and protection duties. This change left a hole the marines filled as starship based special recon and assault troops. Starfleet requested the FMI to fill that role again by activating a little-known corps of special ops teams called SABRE. Standing for S.pecial A.ssault, B.oarding, R.econ, and E.vasion. SABRE Corps teams were to be assigned to outward bound starships on a case by case basis due to the organization's low number of trained available recruits.

SABRE Corps Members are specifically trained for the hazards of spaceborne combat vice general infantry duties. Many studies have indicated that the survival of SABRE team excursions are 40 percent higher then those of traditional general infantry boarding parties.

Currently the whole SABRE Corps is under the command of Brigader General Michael Vesuvious.

The SABRE Detachment assigned to a vessel or station will consist of a single Operational Detachment Alpha (ODA or "A-Team"). These twelve man teams are the front line units of the SABRE Corps, operating wherever needed. They are very well trained and highly dangerous units when operating in a combat role.

With smaller classes (for example Defiant, Nova and Sabre class ships) carrying only the ODA, larger vessels will also carry an Operational Detachment Bravo (ODB or "B-Team"). This eleven man team acts as headquarters, and command and control for the "A-Team" in the field.

If the vessel doesn't have a B-Team, the vessel's command crew itself will function (after a fashion) as an ODB, providing as much support as they can. However, they will not function as a command element over the A-Team.
