| Huron Class Runabout in service |
The Huron Class is a Starfleet auxiliary support craft attached normally to starships and stations to be used for long term multipurpose away missions. This class is designated as a runabout type vessel as it mainly built to be operated by more then two people for longer term missions duration.
The Huron Class runabout was designed to replace the old Danube Class runabouts which had been in service since 2369. It was decided that with recent advancements due to the Dominion War Starfleet would introduce a new class of runabout to fill the Danube class’ roles in the Federation as a long-range personnel/cargo transport.
The newer class had newer warp engines and power distribution, upgraded computer cores, and defensive systems. Making it a formidable successor of the ever popular Danube class. The class would have a highly modular platform, which allows easy configuration for a multitude of missions. Two such modules are the mission module, sensor pod and a weapons pod.
In 2389 the Huron Class had completed replaced all Danube class runabouts in service as the Danube class runabouts were decommissioned and used to help in construction of other smaller crafts.
Namesake
The class was named after one of the Great Lakes of North America, Earth where most Huron class runabouts would be named after lakes on Earth.
