Empok Nor

History

During the Borg War planets, starbases and outposts were completely destroyed or assimilated by the Borg. However there was one outpost that wasn't: Empok Nor. A Cardassian built space station originally set in the fringes of Cardassian space was undamaged by the Borg. Although for some unknown reason Empok Nor ended up on the other side of the quadrant by 2403 with it's current position along what once was the Federation-Klingon-Romulan boarder better known as The Triangle.

It's believed by many to have been placed there by the Borg to eventually be used as a strategically placed outpost. By others it was believed to be a last ditch effort by a Cardassian Order to protect themselves. However both the lack of battle damage and the lack of signs of Borg assimilation efforts dispute both theories to an extent. The outpost was found in 2403 by USS Rhode Island and after Starfleet Command learned of the outpost they immediately put plans on the drawing board to refit and crew the station similar to the way Deep Space 9 was so many years ago.

Six ships were dispatched to Empok Nor to begin refitting her. The station was in almost perfect condition with the exception of a few drained power reactors. It was planned to have all the systems replaced with new, up-to-date, systems including bio-neural circuitry and just like DS9 the weapons on the station were to be improved drastically. After all the planning for refitting was done it was realized that Empok Nor would become a fortress. The name Empok Nor was kept for the station to show how it was culturally diverse and Captain Lorvan, an Andorian male, was made the official commander of the base and also assigned to oversee the refitting.

The USS Sao Paulo was assigned to the base as a primary support vessel with three Danube Class runabouts assigned to the launching pads. The station is scheduled to complete refitting and crewing by sometime early 2404. However the station hasn't even been listed as active on the Starfleet roster yet and already problems have arisen. The Cardassian Union has launched a complete protest with the Federation Council saying that Empok Nor is their property. Starfleet is claiming it is now Federation property since the Cardassians abandoned the station decades ago and since it made its way to the triangle, which is still a mystery.

Moreoever on the position of Empok Nor recently members of Starfleet Command as well as Starfleet R&D have been looking to move the station closer to Cardassian space to use as a defensive outpost should the need arise. However moving the station that far would reguardless take nearly a year if not more.

Update

After a tense situation with Gul Ocett and several Cardassian vessels the crew of the Excalibur decided the only way to get the station to it's destination in one piece was the quantum slipstream drive. After evacuating the crew of Empok Nor to the stations core the daring plan was executed. Seven hours later the station was at it's destination -- orbit of Betazed. Empok Nor currently resides there where it can now keep a keen eye on the Cardassians and their activity.
