Star Trek: Echo is a Futility's End fiction series written by Cath. Set during the Borg War, it chronicles the cases and experiences of a pair of Starfleet Special Investigations officers. It begins in the year 2392, at the birth of the department. With the war progressing badly for allies, the Klingon and Romulan Empires pushed back into Federation space, unrest amongst civilians and the military alike is high. SSI has been formed to fight the crimes that would rip apart the defenders before even the Borg could.
SSI's Echo Team is one of the first partnerships of investigators. The two officers are Alya Kade, a seasoned security officer and Joined Trill whose sole prior host was a veritable Renaissance man, and David Jackson, a starfighter pilot headhunted by SSI when his flight status is revoked. The work of the mismatched pair suffers from their clashing personalities, but as the threats to the Federation stack up, they prove themselves a strong team with talents to complement each other.
Echo is a serialised piece, most episodes stand-alone cases or incidents, though all tie into a wider storyline of Federation criminals, corrupt Starfleet officers, and the degradation of civilisation, morality, and justice in the face of an implacable foe.

Episode 1: Prime

The first episode of Echo. Jackson and Kade are paired together at New Moscow, and sent to investigate how a group of civilian insurgents on Vega Prime have acquired a large amount of Starfleet-issue munitions. But the hunt will take them far from Vega Prime, to the heart of crime, where trusting the wrong person does not just mean losing the case - it means death.
Episode 2: Beyond Antares

Echo Team are the only SSI near when a supply shipment stopping off at Antares III carrying valuable quantum torpedoes is hijacked and flown into the dangerous, volatile Antares Maelstrom. Jackson and Kade must team up with the USS Warden to recover the cargo, save the lives of the crew, and discover the truth behind the hijackers' actions.

The celebrations of SSI's biggest and most successful case are brought to a tragic halt when an explosion rocks Starbase 12, killing one officer and leaving several others in critical condition. The attack quickly has one lead suspect: a survivor of the Cardassian Occupation on the payroll of Vincent Black. Jackson and Kade are assigned to bring the assassin to justice in a case where it's hard to tell who's the hunter, and who's the hunted.
Episode 4: Fearless
A tragedy such as the murder of a senior staff member on the USS Fearless seems a routine case for Echo Team. Except that the Fearless was Alya Kade's last assignment, and it becomes quickly apparent that this is a ship of secrets, lies, and a dark, burning desire to never let these come to light - at any cost.
