USS Lakota

An uprated Excelsior Class vessel originally used to attempt to stop USS Defiant reaching Earth as part of Admiral Leyton's attempted coup d'état, Lakota served to coordinate and deploy Starfleet Security forces on Earth during the period of martial law and received a refit that included upgraded phasers and a supply of quantum torpedoes. The ship was declared missing in action on December 10th 2390 after being sent to investigate an area of severe subspace disturbance several hundred lights from the Sol system.

The ship had entered the subspace disturbance and been flung to a point near the galactic core, her navigational deflector badly damaged and leaking radiation. Lacking the resources to repair the deflector, the crew worked their way at low warp toward friendly space, finally discovered by a Starfleet vessel in 2404. However, the Starfleet ship was one with a crew loyal to Sam Kirok, who ordered the crew of the Lakota slaughtered and the ship put into hiding for major refits. Among other additions, the Lakota was fitted with the second prototype of the quantum slipstream drive. Difficulties with the refits kept the ship in hidden drydock until after Kirok's deposing at the hands of Admiral Cash's Renegade Armada.

After being reclaimed by Starfleet, the Lakota was placed under command of Captain Andrew Hearst. It was sent to intercept the SS Franklin, a runabout owned by Professor Sopek, to prevent it from delivering the Orb of Time to Bajor, then was later a part of a Federation task group, along with the USS Chimera and USS South Carolina, that rescued the USS Foresight from an attack by the Terran Empire flagship ITV Enterprise.
