Starfleet Special Investigations

Starfleet Special Investigations (abbreviated SSI) is a wing of Starfleet Security focused primarily on federal criminal investigations, with jurisdiction above all other branches of Starfleet Security or local law enforcement.
Overview
It was initially founded in 2392, headed by Commodore Lloyd MacKenzie, as an initiative to focus on domestic criminal threats during the Borg War, when almost all of the Federation was focused on the external invasion. Since then it has grown massively in size and authority, granted extreme powers during the War to permit it to effectively handle crime, and very little of that power has been curbed since the end of the conflict.
SSI was originally considered something of a joke by the majority of Starfleet, filled with officers who had either upset someone and were put in the department as punishment, or true idealists. In a time where Starfleet was geared for war, those who avoided the conflict and focused on lesser threats such as pirates and smugglers were mocked and dismissed. However, in the more open aftermath of the Borg War, SSI has been credited with having protected the Federation from being overrun by the 'scum of the universe'.
Currently under the command of Rear Admiral Logan Callahan, SSI still holds many of the massive powers it wielded to make law enforcement speedy and efficient during the war, and has often come under criticism for this authority.
- It is sometimes claimed by more liberal elements of the Federation that these powers have been kept within SSI by the administration so as to better enforce the so-called "Jellico Doctrine", and SSI is often seen as a heavy-handed protector of autocratic interests.
