Re-Development of Norway Class

2380 saw high production of the Norway class starship as it attempted to help fill in the gap that was being left as a number of Miranda class starships were being decommissioned. The Norway class was developed to be used for short range scientific/diplomatic vessel within Federation space. The class had performed well during the Dominion War as back up defence ships within in the inner core territories.

Like many class of starships when the Borg attacked Raeya in early August 2382, Starfleet issued an order for its ships to be more combat oriented to fend off possible future invasions.

The Norway was going to have a refit so it could act as an escort for freighters while ships like the Defiant Class, Sabre Class and other small powerful starship could engage the hostile enemies. The Norway had two large laboratories which helped in its scientific capabilities. The refit had one of these facilities completely removed. On top of that, the ambassadorial quarters were also reduced leaving the ship with a single room for any dignitary visiting the vessel. The diplomatic function hall was also reduced to fifty percent in size.

The shuttlebay was also redesigned and instead of an aft launch door the shuttles would be launched from a ventral door. The ship’s compliment in auxiliary craft was decreased to just four type eighteen shuttlepods.

The tactical systems were also changed, and the designers took their inspirations from an old Earth starship design; the NX class. The ship was only armed with one type VIII phaser bank and one type IX phaser array along with two torpedo launchers (one aft, one forward). So with the idea from the NX class, the designers consulted Starfleet Tactical about incorporating type IX phasers in to a canon style. They didn’t want to use the type U phasers as they used a lot of energy (as witnessed by the Defiant class and others). For several months Starfleet Tactical looked at the system and soon created something specifically for the Norway class and its capabilities. The new cannons would rest on the dorsal side of the ship’s triangular shaped saucer, two forward and one aft. However the engineers found a small glitch, if the ship used all of its new phaser cannons at once then there would be an eleven percent ship-wide power loss. Power transformers and buffers were installed to prevent this drop in power to affect the overall performance of the ship. Micro fusion reactors were installed to help cope with the reduction by providing at least twenty percent of the fire power to the cannons. There was nothing the engineers could do about the torpedo launchers as there was no more room or power to install extra launchers. However the ship’s torpedo arsenal was altered. Its hellfire, transphasic and tri-cobalt torpedoes were removed and the ship was given only photon or quantum torpedoes to use.

Crew facilities were altered as well, as the ship’s crew count was lowered to allow more “experienced officers to assist on the frontlines and other vital assignments in the fleet. Only one holodeck was left. Every crewmember doubled up in quarters, except for the commanding officer. This allowed the ship to carry either more cargo or weapons.

By mid-2380’s most of the ships in the fleet were adjusted to use trelinium crystals as a catalyst in their ship’s warp core for matter/anti-matter reaction. The Norway class also received this updates increase the warp performance slightly.

The USS Warsaw was the first Norway class vessel to receive the updates and successfully (along with several other Norway class ships) survived the Borg War because of these upgrades.

Summary of Re-Development

  • 2382: Starfleet issues a general order for the Norway class starship’s capabilities as frigate to be improved. A small team from the Advanced Starship Design Bureau is assigned the task. Their initial “revisionsâ€? are approved and the Oakland Shipyards are designated the base of operations.
  • 2383: The Federation Council disapproves of the plans to increase Starfleet’s combat capabilities in every single ship design. However Starfleet proceeds with the improvements to the fleet and the USS Warsaw is selected to become the prototype for the new Norway class upgrades. Refits begins to the Warsaw by February. New computer cores are installed to adapt and handle with the new refits. Primary and secondary chassis's now at 100% completion. Ship undergoes inspections as reviews, construction is allowed to continue.
  • 2384: New impulse engines delivered and installed. New EPS system finally brought online. Computer cores are activated and ship functions begin to be transferred from station control to ship control. Computer systems are now operating at 80%. A re-designed trelinium powered warp core is fixed. Warp core begins primary testing.
  • 2385 Micro Fusion Reactors delivered to assist in powering ships systems, most notable the new phaser cannons. New bridge module installed. Computer system fully self aware and umbilical from the station are cut as the ship become self sufficient. Auxiliary craft compliment altered. Adjustments are also made to torpedo arsenal.
  • 2386 On 9th December 2386 the USS Warsaw is officially commissioned by Starfleet at Oakland Shipyards during a brief ceremony. Bridge plaque is put in pride of place and Commander Josephine Holmes. Ship begins shakedown cruise estimate to last six months.
