Named and numbered for the Excelsior Class Hood, a frontline vessel in the Dominion War, the newer encarnation was a Sovereign Class vessel that served during The Borg War. From 2389 onwards, she was commanded by Captain Martin Mayfair and served on the frontlines in a variety of roles, involving both direct combat and planetary evacuation. Following heavy exchange of fire in the Battle of Sol, the ship was decommissioned and subsequently scrapped as Starfleet pulled its resources and strengthened what vessels it could.

Fighter pilot 2Lt (prov.) Cameron Ferguson served on the Hood from 2394 to 2399, earning a promotion to 1Lt in early 98.
