Background

Pre-Starfleet

Before his arrival on the USS Hood, Ferguson ’s background is largely unreported to Starfleet. He maintains that his biological parents were never known to him and he was raised by Captain Idaran (ee-da-ran) of the AMC since a young age when the Captain discovered him on an empty Federation shuttle in 2364. Though the five-year-old (the ship’s doctor was able to make a precise estimate based on Ferguson ’s cellular growth) boy was obviously Human, Idaran chose to take him as his own and named him Giraan (gee-ran) meaning, ‘lucky one.’ Giraan’s being raised in and around the militaristic culture of Andorians led to him developing an interest in the history of war as well as contributing to a strict diet and a physical life. Though he was clearly no Andorian, his willingness to learn and aptitude for the tasks delegated to him meant that integration with the crew was rarely a problem. As he grew older, he began to take an interest in the fighters that the AMC had commissioned to protect its trade routes and at the age of sixteen, took part in a three-week selection programme for pilots. Though he had only flown unarmed shuttles till this point, he displayed a natural if not refined skill for piloting the craft, and was selected to embark upon the course. Towards the end of 2375, he completed the course and began to fly escort to AMC freighters.

In 2382 as reports came in of the Borg attack in the Raeya system, Giraan listened to them with the rest of the quadrant in a state of shock and disbelief. Though the Andorians had encountered the Borg on only a few occasions, the stories of Starfleet’s battles against them were terrible and the AMC immediately applied to Starfleet for protection. With The Fleet’s attention turned to the border, this plea from an independent inner-world company went largely unheard and so for the next six years, Giraan and his squadron (which he was now in command of) continued to fly sole support for the AMC freighters, however with the Borg being engaged by Starfleet and its allies on the border, no sight of them was seen near the inner worlds.

Growing uneasy with his lack of involvement in the troubles, Giraan contacted Captain Idaran and together, they planned to travel to the front lines with any able crewmembers that were willing. The two were not alone in their views and Giraan’s entire squadron agreed to travel with them. Knowing that the AMC would not allow the relocation of one of its largest freighters and a squadron of twelve fighters, Giraan quickly arranged the evidence to lay nearly all of the blame at his feet. He encouraged his pilots to enter personal logs regarding collusion on his part and subsequently, changed his name to a Human one to better hide his tracks. Though a Human commanding a squadron of Andorians was not a regular occurrence, the change of name would make it hard for anyone to track him, especially considering the chaos on the front lines.

With the sub-light fighters aboard the freighter, the crew set off for the border however given the craft’s age, it was not for another eight months before they reached the combat zone in early 2389. With the freighter not being heavily armed, it was agreed that it should form part of a small civilian-manned fleet in the area charged with evacuating those planets and stations where an imminent threat was feared. In 2394, the freighter was aiding in the evacuation of a Starfleet outpost near the Klingon border when a solitary cube arrived earlier than expected. With the evacuation of the planet scheduled to take another thirty minutes and only four Starfleet vessels in the system, Ferguson led his squadron alongside those of Starfleet in defending the transport craft. Though the cheaply bought fighters of the AMC were vastly inferior to those of Starfleet, their combined firepower managed to hold off the attack of the cube for the required thirty minutes. Just. During the course of the fight, two of the defending starships were lost with all hands aboard and twenty of the thirty-six fighters that engaged the cube were destroyed. After fleeing the system, Ferguson , Idaran and the Andorians considered their position. Knowing that as the Borg closed in, Starfleet would most likely draw its final line at Earth, many crewmembers wanted to return to Andor and make what little difference they could there. Idaran was among them though recognising the slim chance of survival, urged his foster son to stay with the Starfleet force and boost their pilot compliment. Though he felt more loyalty to his surrogate father than to any Human, he agreed to stay after listening to the stern reasoning of Idaran. As the majority of the Andorians left, Ferguson and the few that remained were given provisional ranks and positions by the CO of the U.S.S. Hood, Captain Martin Mayfair.

U.S.S. Hood

The Hood was a Sovereign Class vessel originally outfitted with eighteen Valkyries but after losses of both capital ships and fighters, she now held a collection of small craft and so it was that Ferguson gained experience in most of the small craft employed by Starfleet. Though new to the advanced designs, his natural ability shone through and during his time aboard, he earned two letters of commendation and a promotion to 1st Lieutenant.

In 2398, the battle-scarred Hood and her last fighter squadron lined up with the rest of the allied fleet above Earth. Ferguson began the fight as the squadron’s second in command however with the swift destruction of the flight group’s leader on the first day of battle, he served for the majority of the fight in command of the squadron. Towards the end of the battle when it became clear that victory was in the hands of the Allies, contact was lost with Ferguson ’s fighter and in the chaos of peace that followed, he was forgotten and listed optimistically, as MIA by Captain Mayfair.

12th EDF Squadron

Ferguson joined the Apes in 2403 following a re-apperance in the Sol System early in the year. Due to the lack of experienced pilots in the Fleet, he was ordered to join the Mars-based group with his previous provisional rank, until such time as his CO (Squadron Commander Joseph Ryan), saw fit to reccomend otherwise. Ferguson's first action of note upon reaching Mars was severely damaging a newly assigned Valkyrie fighter in his first training exercise. Following the creation of Star Fighter Command and the implementation of a new ranking system, Ferguson was given the rank of Lieutenant.
