Andorians are one of the two native races of the ice moon, Andor. Currently, the biggest settlement of Andorians on Earth is located in Greenland, due to their preferred cold climate.

Physiology

They are most obviously distinguished from other races by their rich blue skin, white or yellow hair and protruding antennae which aid them in balance. The loss of an antenna is considered humiliating for an Andorian, but the limb can grow back unaided within nine months. The movement of the antennae, whether voluntary or not often signifies a particular emotion though it is not always clear of what nature this emotion is for example, the antennae curl forward both when an Andorian is angered and aroused.

Andorians have a higher metabolism than Humans and are susceptable to high temperatures, losing weight at an extreme rate in hotter environments. Though compatible with Humans, Andorians have an unusual internal physiological setup, making intravenous injection impossible; injections must be given to muscles.

Gender

Andorians have four sexes; zhen, shen, chan, and thaan. Zhens and shens are roughly equivalent in reproductive function and appearance to females of two-sexed species, while chans and thaans are roughly equivalent to males. Some species percieve shens and chans to be somewhat androgenous-looking.

Society

Like Klingons, Andorians are a militaristic race placing a high value on combat service and rank. Though capable of duplicity, they tend to fight with honour and deplore dishonesty. They are often highly emotional but are not known to extend great charity towards others; they do however place great stock in family. Andorian females are seen as equal to males due to their abilities in combat.

Notable Traditions

  • The Ushaan is a duel to the death, fought with ice picks (ushaan-tor) and governed by an enormous set of rules, with around 12,000 noted amendments.
  • If a member of the military dies away from home, it is customary for a part of their body to be transported back to Andor.
