The Son'a are an egotistical and materialist humanoid society who come from sector 441 and were originally from Ba'ku. The Son’a were outcasts from the Ba'ku society as they attempted to take over the planet several generations ago. They went against the idyllic ideology of the Ba'ku Elders of not using technology every day life. After they left the homeworld the Son'a became a powerful entity near to the Briar Patch. They had conquered both the Tarlac and the Ellora races who had became second class citizens, serving as aides or soldiers for the Son’a. They made several advancements in the medical sciences which included the ability to pro-long their lives with the use of genetic manipulation and advanced surgical procedures. They even developed high quantities of the narcotic drug of Ketracel White by 2375.

When the Federation was made aware of their developments which could aid the Dominion the Federation Council quickly made the Son'a allies. The Son'a soon joined Starfleet in joint scientific studies of the Briar Patch which resulted in the discovery (at least it was a discovery for the Federation) of the Ba'ku homeworld. The Ba'ku from the Federation's perception was pre-warp civilisation. Federation scientists discovered the properties of the Metaphasic Radiation in the ice rings of the planet. They were in a constant state of temporal flux which in return keeps all organic life on the planet rejuvenated including the Ba'ku people.

The Son'a had already created a metaphasic collector which would harvest the particles to be used in scientific research. The only snatch was it would render the planet uninhabited for years. For some unknown reason the Federation Council agreed to the plan as long as the Son'a agreed to follow Starfleet procedure in relocating the Ba'ku people to another planet through the means of a cloaked holoship. However it was kept an entire secret to the Federation public and only made aware to key senior Federation politicians and Starfleet personnel.

When the USS Enterprise-E entered the patch in 2375 they discovered the plan after Lieutenant Commander Data was shot after finding the holoship in a nearby valley to the Ba'ku settlement. Captain Jean Luc Picard exposed the true nature of the Starfleet-Son'a presence in the patch to the rest of the Federation with help from his crew. In doing so it showed the true nature of the Son'a and how aggressive they can be. It also finally proved rumored reports that Son'a ships were outfitted with isolytic subspace weapons.

Starfleet would note this event as the Ba'ku Insurrection. After the incident many Son'a returned to the Ba'ku homeworld to begin the healing process however some rebelled against their government and joined the Dominion in their war with the Federation.

By 2397 relations with between the Son'a and the Federation were on high, so when the Borg attacked them the Federation was quick to render aid to the Son'a.

In 2403 the Son'a colony on Ba'ku had developed in to a quite a large settlement had became Federation Protectorates.
