The USS Akira (NCC-62497) has been in the service of Starfleet since 2368 and has participated in many of the major engagments in defence of the Federation since its comission. It was the prototype for the Akira Class starship
The vessel (and its class) were named for the character of Akira in the manga and film of the same name. In the manga, Akira is a child that was experimented on by the Japanese government and developed superhuman powers, particularly physcokinetic abilities, eventually destroying the fictional Neo-Tokyo. In the 1988 film, Akira becomes emperor of the new Tokyo Empire. Given the unprecedented war-like nature of the Akira-class, the design team saw fit to christen it in homage to the superhuman child.
In 2400 the ship's dedication plaque was replaced with a new one, the motto read: "Amarimono ni wa fuku ga aru" which is a Japanese proverb which means: "Fortunes exist among leftovers".
History
Captain J'al Grenn commanded the Akira from 2391 to 2396. During this time, the Akira took part in the first assault on the Borg's shipyards. This was a major joint mission between the Dominion and the Federation.
The Akira was a part of the effective Strike Force Alpha during the Battle of Sol and one of the few ships in that wing to survive the battle.
Currently the Akira is commanded by Captain Broht Adislo and serves in the defence of Earth in the First Fleet. The Akira was assigned to diplomatic matters in mid-2403 in assisting the Axanar. Admiral Paris re-directed the Akira to assist the USS Enterprise-F in its mission at Weytahn. However the flagship was quickly assisted by the arrival of the USS Miranda and several Andorian ships. The Akira was re-directed back to Axanar shortly afterwards.
