The "Akira-class" was the premier heavy cruiser and carrier of the late 24th century during the Dominion and Borg War.

Redevelopment of Akira Class

By 2383 the Akira class starship had been in service to Starfleet as a frontline heavy combat cruiser and fighter carrier for nearly twenty years. The ships of this class had become popular sights among Federation space. It was only fitting that by its twentieth anniversary the ship receive a redevelopment of its systems to compete with the newest technology in the galaxy.

Recent breakthroughs and discoveries with more efficient power and computer systems allowed for the next batch of starships to be built the latest technologies on offer to Starfleet. The Akira class was one of many old classes to receive them as Utopia Plantia and other Federation shipyards started construction on the next group of Akiras to be launched. Two of the newest features to the Akira included upgrades to type fifteen phaser arrays and the use of a trelinium crystal based warp drive.

The vessels continued to serve Starfleet well even during the Borg War. The refits assisted well allowing the Akira’s to become the fastest fighter carrier to deploy support vessels in a possible danger zone. Productions of these ships were placed in to a high gear in favour of other carrier type vessels.

Summary of Redevelopment

  • 2382: Starfleet issues orders for the Akira class to receive upgraded systems from recent technological breakthroughs to improve overall ship performance. Most noted improved features include tactical, computer and propulsion technologies.
  • 2383: Celebrating twenty successful years of service to the Federation the USS Akira NCC 62497 is re-launched from Utopia Plantia shipyards. The ship is given six months for a shakedown cruise to test the new systems.
  • 2384: All Akira class starships are ordered for refits and the newest ones to be constructed to the newest specifications.
